Malay Nationalism
  • 1- Religious stage 1900-1926
  • Islam was not properly propagated which caused
    Muslims became very conservative and confused.
  • 20th cent.- Islamic reformist Movement led by
    Abduh - promoted the idea of Pan-Islamism
  • In Malaya- the idea was brought by S.S Al Hadi

2- Social Economic stage(1927-36)
  • The establishment of KMS by En,Eunos in 1926.
  • Emphasized on economics and social achievement
    and encouraged the elite Malays to assist the
    government to provide education to Malay
    Children.

3- Political stage(1937-1941)
  • The most radial group was KMM (1938) - led by
    Ibrahim Yaakob
  • He spread the idea of gaining independence by
    revolution.
  • Influence by Indonesian revolution - led by
    President Sukarno.

Chinese nationalism
  • The nationalism began since China- Japan war in
    1894 - 1895.
  • Influence more by the political struggles in
    China because they still had a feeling that China
    was their homeland.
  • Revolutionary movement - modernization in China
    which influenced them especially among Chinese in
    Perak and Selangor.
  • Sun Yat Sen influence- against Manchu dynasty

  • Kuomintang party influence - the unity of China
    and strengthen the country through
    industrialization and modernization.
  • Malayan Communist Party influence- launched
    rallies and strike in Malaya in order to form a
    republic communist of Malaya.

Indian nationalism
  • Anti colonial movement among Punjabi group- the
    movement was influenced by Ghadr movement in
    India in order to expel the British from Malaya.
  • A few Indian associations were formed in order to
    protect their interest in Malaya.
  • 1936- Central Indian Association of Malaya was
    form
