Introduction

• M.K.C.G.Medical College Hospital as a tertiary
  referral centre, receives a large number of
  complicated septic abortions. So in an attempt to
  evaluate the magnitude of the tragic problem of
  unsafe abortion in south Orissa, one of the
  poorest regions of the country, this study was
  undertaken, involving 76 cases of SEPTIC ABORTION
  admitted between Jan 1999 to May 2002.

CONCLUSION

• Womens reproductive health including abortions
  is a major health concern.
• In context to womans right over her body and
  fertility, the need to opt out of an undesirable
  pregnancy safely is as important as reaching it
  to joyous outcome.
• Even after three decades since legalization of
  abortion, incidence of Unsafe Abortion has not
  reduced.
• It has been and it will continue to be a major
  cause of maternal mortality and morbidity.

CONCLUSION

• It is because the facilities for safe abortion in
  our country are still far from satisfactory.
• This is forcing an unknown but large number of
  women to undergo unsafe abortion endangering
  their lives.
• Unfortunately this is an avoidable preventable
  tragedy (CRIME?).
• It accounts for not only more than 10 of
  maternal deaths but also a very high rate of
  maternal morbidity.

CONCLUSION

• Though very common, unfortunately its true
  magnitude will never be assed.
• Our study is only the tip of the iceberg
• Silver lining- There is a slight decrease in
  death in septic abortion due to advances in
  management.
• So there is need for information on- existing
  facilities, utilization of facilities, changing
  demands and accessibility and availability of
  efficacious and safe procedures so as to plan
  the appropriate strategy.

CONCLUSION
Let each baby be born by choice and not by
chance . Safe Abortion Saves Life
To achieve this not only we should provide easily
accessible safe abortion facilities and
contraceptive practices specially in the rural
areas, but must have an awareness campaign to
educate the women in particular and the society
at large.
