- Competency Solving multiplication facts with the
factor six using insect manipulatives and the
split a factor strategy - SOL Math 3.9 Recall multiplication facts through
the nines table - SOL Science 1.5 classification by appendages and
2.1 investigation, observation, and

- Class Expectations
- SCORE
- Study!
- Care!
- Observe!
- Respect!
- Enjoy!
- The 3rd grade students are asked to look at the
class class expectations and discuss what each
point means to them. The teacher reinforces those
points brought up by the students that make the
classroom a good learning environment.

5Concept Development Word Problem
Competency Solving multiplication facts with the
factor six using insect manipulatives and the
split a factor strategy
- Rationalization It is a fun hobby to collect and
study different types of insects that live around
you. Learning your multiplication facts will make
math easier and more fun. - Word Problem for Relevancy The classroom has a
new bug aquarium. This week we are going to put
insects in each aquarium. If we collect four
insects, how many insect legs will be in the
aquarium? If we collect six insects, how many
insect legs will be in the aquarium?

7Concrete, Pictorial, and Abstract Levels of
Solving This Problem
Competency Solving multiplication facts with the
factor six using insect manipulatives and the
split a factor strategy
- Sort the insects from other bugs. Count out four
(six) insects. Count the legs on each insect. - Pictorial Draw four (six) insects with the
correct number of legs on each. Count the legs - Abstract 4X624 (6X4) or 6X636
8Introduction Examples and Non-Examples
Competency Solving multiplication facts with the
factor six using insect manipulatives and the
split a factor strategy
- Students will sort examples and non-examples of
insects for use as manipulatives for solving
multiplication problems with the factor six. - Students will also sort examples and non-examples
of multiplication problems located on card stock.

13Comparison of Example 1 and 2
Competency Solving multiplication facts with the
factor six using insect manipulatives and the
split a factor strategy
- Similar
- Example one and two both are multiplication
problems with the factor 6 - Both use insects to help solve the problem
- Both problems break a factor into smaller parts
- Different
- The multiplicands are different for each problem
- Different types of insects are used to help solve
the problem - Example one breaks a larger factor into three
smaller factors Example two breaks a larger
factor into two smaller factors
14Practice Guided
Competency Solving multiplication facts with the
factor six using insect manipulatives and the
split a factor strategy
- Students will receive a series of multiplication
problems with the factor 6 and they will solve
the problems using their insect manipulatives and
the split a factor strategy - The teacher will observe the students at work and
assist when called upon, or elaborate and make
corrective feedback when necessary
15Practice Independent
Competency Solving multiplication facts with the
factor six using insect manipulatives and the
split a factor strategy
- Homework Students show how they would use split
a factor to solve each of the following
problems 3x6, 4x6, 5x6, 6x6, 7x6, 8x6, 9x6, 10x6 - The teacher will grade each assignment to check
for understanding of the facts and the strategy
used
16Application
Competency Solving multiplication facts with the
factor six using insect manipulatives and the
split a factor strategy
- The students divide into small groups and use the
split a factor strategy to create and solve
multiplication facts without a 6 and with the
numerals 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9. - The students give group presentations to the
class introducing other strategies that they use
to remember their multiplication facts.
17Assessment
- Students will be interviewed one at a time and a
rubric will be used to determine mastery of the
competency. - Eight out of ten points are necessary for
mastery. - Other students will play War with
multiplication fact cards while the assessment
interviews take place.
