• Semestered School Courses offered on a
  half-year basis.
• Generally, 8 subjects in two blocks
• 4 subjects from September through January
• another 4 subjects from February through June
• 5 period day, each period length is 75 minutes
• 4 periods for classes and 1 period for lunch

ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMA (OSSD)

• 30 credits (110 hours each)
• 18 compulsory credits
• 12 elective credits (4 of which are
• compulsory Religion credits - 1 each year)
• 40 hours community service
• Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test

• 4 English one credit per grade
• 1 French as a second language
• 3 Mathematics one in Grade 11 or 12

• 1 Canadian History
• 1 Canadian Geography
• 1 Civics and Career Studies (each awarded a 0.5

Community Involvement

• Encourages civic responsibility

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test

• Students take the Literacy Test in Grade 10
• Students must pass the test in order to graduate
• Achievement is recorded on OST
• Based on language and communication expectations
  of the curriculum up to and including Gr. 9

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test

• If student is unable to meet provincial
• standard on first attempt
• Remedial help will be available if a student
  writes for a second time
• OR
• A student will be recommended to take the Ontario
  Literacy Course
• (OLC 4O1)

Academic Courses

• Academic courses cover essential concepts plus
  additional material.
• While course work exposes students to both theory
  and practical applications, there is a greater
  emphasis on
• THEORY ABSTRACT THINKING
• as a basis for future learning and problem
  solving.

Applied Courses

• Applied courses focus on the essential concepts.
• While course work exposes students to both theory
  and practical applications, the emphasis is on
  PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS.
• Course work relates to familiar real-life
  situations and provides students
• with the opportunity for hands-on
• application of the concepts they learn.

Academic Applied

• Similarities
• Both academic and applied courses require
  students to learn the essential knowledge and
  skills.
• Prepare students for the Grade 10 literacy test.
• Grade 9 prepares students for their streams in
  Grade 10.

• Differences
• Instructional strategies and materials.
• Methods of assessment and evaluation.
• Additional related course work is covered in
  Academic.
• Expectation of learning skills.

Locally Developed Courses

• A locally developed course is a course that meets
  educational needs not met by provincial
  curriculum documents.
• e.g. MAT 1L1
• Provides an opportunity to build skills so that
  the student may be successful in future high
  school programming.

  students taking the subject.

Changing Course Type for Grade 10

• Students will be able to move from
• APPLIED courses in Grade 9 to ACADEMIC courses
  in Grade 10
• (additional crossover materials of up to 30
  hours is strongly recommended)
• Students will be able to move from ACADEMIC
  courses in Grade 9 to APPLIED courses in Grade 10
  
• (additional crossover materials of up to 30
  hours is strongly recommended)
• Applied math to Academic math in Grade 9 must be
  done in Summer School

Grade 10 Courses

• Students will have to consider future goals when
  they make choices for Grade 10.
• Some Grade 10 courses will be prerequisites for
  specific Grade 11 courses.
• Transfer courses will be available for students
  after Grade 10 (transfer courses allow students
  to change streams according to their future
  destination).
