and interviewing techniques - provide referrals to internship and co-op
opportunities posted on the CSEL website - support the learning process while you

- Decide what you want from an internship.
- Why do you want an internship?
- What do you hope to learn?
- In what field(s) are you trying to gain
experience and skills? - If you are not sure what career field you are
interested in, please schedule an appointment
with a CSEL Coordinator.
11How to Prepare
- Step 2
- Check with your academic department.
- Determine if your internship will count in your
degree program as a requirement, a departmental
elective or a general elective. - Decide if you want to pursue an internship for
credit or not-for-credit (remember that both will
appear on your transcript reflecting
major-related learning experience). - For credit, talk to an internship coordinator or
your advisor to make sure you understand the
requirements. -

- Obtain information about resume writing from
Career Services and Experiential Learning (CSEL),
prepare a resume and have it critiqued by CSEL
Coordinators. Be prepared to send a resume, cover
letter, and if necessary, letters of
recommendation, writing samples and a transcript
to the employer. -

- Quantify your achievements.
- Never, ever, misspell words or names.
- Use professional, work-oriented language
(industry buzzwords). - Acquaint yourself with the organization of a
resume and the different types of resumes.

listings, events, and programs through our
web-based systems. (Gold Connection and
PlacePro). - Check internship listings posted in your
department

- Once you find a possible internship opportunity
that interests you, contact a CSEL Coordinator
for referral and career-major specific internship
counseling to assure that the opportunity will
provide an appropriate learning experience for

17Ensuring A Successful Learning Experience
- Remember that you are there to learn and be a
contributing participant - Attempt to blend into the work environment.
- Follow the standards on dress, lunches and
breaks, signing in and out when necessary. - Do not consider yourself an exception to the rule
because you are a student. - Never arrive late.
- Avoid office gossip.
- Be careful not to jeopardize any consideration
for permanent employment.

- Revise your resume.
- Update your registration information with Career
Services and Experiential Learning. - Stop by and give us an internship update.
- Request letters of recommendation and send
thank-you notes. - Build on the experience. Keep in touch with
people with whom you have worked.
