Title: 511 Interoperability

1
511 Interoperability
  • Report to the 511 Working Group
  • April 2005

2
Task Force Goals
  • The Interoperability Task Force has been working
    with two goals in mind
  • Make using 511 easy for those who use multiple
    systems
  • Make access to neighboring travel information
    systems seamless

3
Assess Current 511 Systems
  • Surveyed current 511 deployers to determine
    common system attributes
  • Information gathered on numerous categories
  • User Interface
  • System Content
  • Types of Roads Covered
  • Type of Data
  • Awareness
  • Main Menu Selections
  • Connections to Other Systems

4
Interoperability Quick Tips
  • A number of common elements were found, prompting
the authoring of a Quick Tips document
  • Certain items were targeted, such as a
recommendation for recognition of a wider variety
    of grammars within menu selections.

5
Examples of Common/Alternative Grammars
6
Interoperability Recommendations
  • Beyond grammars, the task force focused on the
transfer of data and/or calls, as well as
    probably hybrid situations
  • Discussions of common call transfer protocols
  • Discussion of data transfer requirements, and
    database commonality issues
  • Discussion of shared applications for 511 systems

7
User Interface
  • All systems have Touchtone
  • 22 plus 2 plan to use IVR
  • 13 plus 2 plan to use text to speech
  • 22 plus 1 plan to use concatenated
  • 11 plus 5 plan to use Floodgates

8
Content
  • All provide Roadway info
  • 12 plus 2 plan to provide Transit
  • 11 plus 1 plan to provide Tourism info

9
Roads Covered
  • All cover Interstates and Us routes
  • Most also have (some) State routes
  • Few have Arterials
  • None have real-time Transit

10
Type of Data
  • All have Weather, Road Conditions, and Incidents
  • 13 plus 1 plan to have Congestion
  • 4 plus 5 plan to have Travel Times
  • 5 plus 1 plan to have Transit Service
    Disruptions

11
Connections
  • 13 plus 2 plan Transfer to Transit
  • 8 plus 3 plan Call Transfer to 511
  • 7 plus 1 plan Application Sharing
  • 1 plus 4 plan Data Transfer

12
Conclusions (for now)
  • National 511 Service Interoperability Vision
  • 511 will be realized through locally deployed
    interoperable systems
  • The ability to transfer calls between systems
will be come as ubiquitous as the systems
    themselves
  • By 2010, individual systems will be linked
together into an integrated, seamless network
  • This will be accomplished through the transfer of
data over a common data structure or shared
    applications
