2
General Information
  • Americans are seen as ignorant people
  • Ignorance is an excuse, but it is no shield(
    Hertsgaard 80)
  • Americans do not think about Americanization
  • Lack of media coverage in the United States
  • Thesis Americans would benefit if the media
told them how people in other countries feel
about issues like Americanization, global warming
    and Americas arrogance.

3
Why are we ignorant Americans?
  • The media
  • To oversimplify, the media reflect elite opinion
but shape mass opinion (Hertsgaard 15)
  • Our government

What is the Kyoto Protocol? How does the USA
Patriot Act affect me?
4
Kyoto Protocol
  • International treaty on climate change
  • United States does not agree with the protocol
  • United States is not looking at other
    perspectives of other countries

There is only one of meso protect me! Dont hurt
me!
5
USA Patriot Act
  • Infringes on our 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th amendment
    rights
  • Media did not mention it in full
  • If Americans only knew

6
Kyoto Protocol and USA Patriot Act
  • This chart is a survey of freshman, sophomores,
    juniors, and seniors.
  • It shows how unaware we are of the global warming
    issue and the Kyoto protocol

7
Lack of Media Coverage
  • Americans do not interact on a daily basis with
    foreigners
  • Foreigners must adjust to us, we assume, not we
    to them (Hertsgaard 112)
  • Americans claim not enough time to learn another
    language
  • Example In The Eagles Shadow, the Texan and the
    Ferris Wheel
  • Focused more on celebrities than our foreign
    policies

8
Americanization
  • Destroying cultures (Ex. Japan)
  • America seems so much better at riding this
    tiger and resentment because Americanization-globa
lization so often feels like the United States
whipping everyone else to speed up, Web up,
    downsize, standardize (Friedman 136-137)
  • Influencing teenagers in other countries

9
Summary
  • Media needs to do a better job at informing
    Americans
  • Very important to understand different views
  • We must learn more about other countries
  • Conclusion
