Who are Millennials (aka Generation Y?
  • Generations are defined not by a formal process,
    but rather by demographers, the press and media,
    popular culture, market researchers, and by
    members of the generation themselves.
  • Years from 1978-2000, which equals about 76
    million people

What are people saying about Millennials?

Family and Friends
  • Very focused on family
  • More family and friends focused and less
    work-centered focused
  • They tend to interact in large sociable networks
    (usually technology based)
  • Rely on peers for decision making more likely to
    believe information that comes from those they
    know and trust

  • More in common with Baby boomers (1946-1964) than
    Generation X (1965-1982)
  • Most 18-25 yr olds are still financially
    dependent upon their parents
  • Supportive of the family unit and wanting a
    family of their own but happens later in life
  • Believe in HEROES (personal family members or
    people they know)

  • They are considered very healthy less illegal
    drug use, alcohol consumption and cigarette
    smoking than previous generations
  • Increase in prescribed drug use, increase in
    obesity
  • More likely to play more video games than
    organized sports
  • They have greater levels of stress

  • Parents are involved heavily
  • Technology based generation they prefer
    fast-paced, technology enabled learning and
    multitasking
  • College entrance and graduation rates are up
  • More seniors will report, they will attend
    college (more than actually attend)

  • Half of all freshman students do not complete
    college
  • Majority drop out before their second year
  • They are more likely to attend several
    institutions during college career
  • Take longer to graduate
  • Tend to set higher goals for themselves

    situations
  • BUT they choose job on flexibility versus pay
  • Used to a very structured life and endless
    choices
  • Prefer things to be personalized to them
    specifically
  • Expect to be respected by those whom they
    interact with

  • Highly confident
  • Generally have a positive outlook
  • Have a moral code of No harm, No foul
  • They are used to research and prone to ask why

  • They dont think about careers as a long-term
    progression
  • Very prone to jump from job to job
  • Usually need a strong mentor and specific
    instructions
  • Usually treats authority figure as an equal
  • Very technology savvy
  • Prefers teamwork over individual assignments

Supporting to Capture Interest
  • Focus on achievements. Millennials are goal
    oriented.
  • They are used to having many options. DONT
    feature-dump but do help them see that they
    have many options.

Addressing Concerns
  • Most will be considering college.
  • You will need to help them make an honest
    comparison between the option.
