Title: GPS
1Continuous Earthquake Monitoring with Global
Positioning System (GPS)
2How does GPS work?
X,Y,Z,T
Absolute positioning
10 m
3Geodetic GPS
Thousands of kilometers apart
2-20 mm
4GPS for Earthquake Monitoring
Seismologists can measure the earthquake in terms
of amount of shaking, which directly relates to
the energy released in the earthquake. However,
they can not measure the site or fault
displacements.
5GPS for Earthquake Monitoring
- GPS can measure the size of the earthquake by
- examining the displacements of pre-determined
- points.
- GPS is also a magnificent tool for obtaining the
- strain accumulation along the fault and
tectonic - strain rates, which may indicate earthquake
- potential.
6GPS for Earthquake Monitoring
GPS can be used for real-time site
displacements. Seismologists can measure the
magnitudes of aftershocks and pre-shocks.
However, these magnitudes can not help us on any
prediction. GPS can show us whether or not the
fault or any pre-determined site has moved due to
the shocks.
