  • Franklin Delano Roosevelt

When FDR Was Born
  • Born in Hyde Park, NY in 1882
  • His family was very wealthy.
  • He was an only child.

Boarding School
  • FDR went to boarding school when he was 14 years
    old.
  • Boarding school is a school where the students
    live at the place where they study.
  • Franklins school had programs that sent them out
    into the community to help people.
  • This was where FDR first began to learn about
    people that didnt live like he did.

FDR Got an Idea
  • Seeing people that didnt make enough money to
    live had an affect on FDR.
  • The idea began to grow in him that it was his
    duty to help them.

Heres How He Helped
  • He ran a summer camp for poor boys.
  • He visited an elderly woman and made sure she had
    coal, water, and food.

FDRs Famous Relative
  • Theodore Roosevelt was FDRs older cousin.
  • He had been governor of New York and Vice
    President of the United States.
  • He became President in 1901 while FDR was in
    college.
  • FDR was inspired to follow in his footsteps

FDR Takes a Wife
  • While FDR was in Law School, he married Eleanor
    Roosevelt.
  • Just like FDR, she believed it was her duty to
    help others.
  • This was one reason they made a good pair.

  • FDR and Eleanor had six children.
  • One of the children died.

Illness Strikes
  • In 1921 Roosevelt got polio.
  • He couldnt walk because of this disease.
  • There was no cure for polio at this time.
  • How would he continue his career in politics?

Heroes Overcome!
  • FDR didnt let polio stop him.
  • He exercised diligently hoping to walk again.
  • Eleanor went to meetings for him and gave
    speeches so they would remember FDR.
  • He went to Warm Springs, GA for treatments.
  • His legs got stronger.

After a Lot of Hard Work
  • FDR was able to take a few steps with crutches or
    by leaning on other people.
  • He never walked again on his own, but he kept
    doing what he wanted to do.
  • He used a wheelchair to move from place to place.

Tough Times in the USA
  • The Great Depression was a very bad time in our
    economy that lasted about ten years.
  • Many people were out of work.
  • Many people were hungry.

The New Deal
  • FDR believed the government should help people
    out of the hard times of the Great Depression.
  • He ran for President promising just that.
  • He said, I pledge myself to a new deal for the
    American people.

President Roosevelt
  • Roosevelt became President in 1933.
  • He kept his promise for a New Deal
  • The New Deal was government program that
    created jobs for people.
  • It also gave them a sense of pride because they
    had work again.
  • They were helping their country too!

The Programs
  • The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) gave people
    jobs in national parks, forests, beaches, and
    campgrounds.
  • The Works Progress Administration (WPA) built
    buildings, roads, parks, and airports.

WAR!
  • A war started in Europe because Germany wanted to
    take over everyones government.
  • Many Americans thought the war in Europe wasnt
    our problem.
  • FDR wanted us to help Great Britain and France
    fight for democracy in Europe.

The US Goes to War
  • On December 7, 1941 Japan attached Pearl Harbor
    in Hawaii.
  • The US declared war on Japan and joined the
    Allies in World War II.

FDR Dies
  • Just before World War II ended FDR died.
  • The Vice President, Harry Truman, became
    President.
  • Later that same year Japan surrendered and the
    war was over.

Positive Character Traits of FDR
  • Cooperative He helped people work together when
    times were tough (The Great Depression and WWII).
  • Good Citizen He worked at summer camps when he
    was young. He was President of the US when he was
    older.
  • Diligent He had to work hard for years to get
    better after he had polio.
  • Compassionate He felt it was his duty to help
    those less fortunate than he was.
