Intelligence African Americans and the Prison
Industrial Complex Our Keynote Speakers are Dr.
Joy James and Judge Pamela Alexander Joy James
is Professor of Africana Studies at Brown
University and teaches political and feminist
theory. She is the author of Resisting State
Violence, Transcending the Talented Tenth and
Shadowboxing. Her edited works on incarceration
politics include States of Confinement and the
forthcoming anthologies Imprisoned Intellectuals
U.S. Political Prisoners and Social Justice and
Abolitionists Incarceration, Enslavement, and
Emancipation. Judge Pamela Alexander has been a
pioneer for African- Americans and women in the
legal profession and has devoted her career to
working toward equality and justice for all
people regardless of race, gender, religion, or
economic status. In 1983, Alexander became the
first African-American female, as well as the
youngest, judge in Hennepin County. During her
years on the Hennepin County bench, Judge
Alexander has handled a number of high-profile
cases. "Incarcerated Intelligence" is conceived
as a forum on the contributions of incarcerated,
progressive authors and theorists to critical
thinking and social justice. To facilitate
intellectual and political discourse, we have
organized a space for a dialogue. Papers will be
presented along with commentators' observations
however, the gathering is designed to encourage
discussions about complex and controversial
political/ethical issues. We are soliciting a
diversity of voices scholars, activists, former
political prisoners, women, men, and youth. The
presence of young scholars and activists,
including Macalester alumni, is especially
welcomed. Proposals are Due December 17, 2004
