Early Music Career

• Monks first job was as a pianist in Mintons
  Playhouse in New York.
• During his first few years playing, he helped to
  influenced the new bebop style.

Career

• In 1955, Monk got a record with Riverside
  Recording Studio.
• His albums recorded there introduced him to the
  public and made him famous.
• He played at the Five Spot with John Coltrane
  and also toured internationally.

Music and style

• Monk played piano and was known for his
  improvisations. His solos often had many rests
  in them.
• Monk was part of the modern jazz movement.
• Monks most famous recording is Round Midnight.
  He is also known for "Epistrophy, "Straight No
  Chaser," "52nd Street Theme," and "Blue Monk."
