5Task 1
- Question
- Can you think and share with us an example of a
project, where you have successfully increased
participation in sport/physical activity in a
hard to reach group? - How did you decide upon the project, the target
population and location? - How did you measure your outcomes?

6Health Inequalities
- What does the term Health Inequality mean?
- The difference in health status or in
distribution of health determinants between
different populations - For example?
- Lifestyle Factors such as diet, exercise or
smoking - Access to Services such as health care or leisure
facilities - Health Outcomes such as life expectancy or
disease - Our services are focussed and funded around the
areas and populations of most need - Projects must have a strong evidence base

11Health Trainer Scheme
- HR PCT Health Trainers are managed by Hayley

time Health Trainer Administrator - They will be based in community settings in the
areas of most need within Hastings, St. Leonards
and Bexhill - Their role is to listen, support, empathise,
empower, give confidence and to signpost
individuals to services that will improve their
lifestyles

12Active Hastings
- HR PCT are a key partner in Active Hastings
- Rational for PCT funding of Active Hastings
- Life Expectancy for both men and women is low
- Hastings is the most deprived authority in East
Sussex, 14 SOAs within England's top 10 most
disadvantaged - Active People data shows that only 16.7 of
Hastings population (over 16 years) take part in
3 x 30 minutes of PA per week - Active Hastings aim is to increase physical
activity participation by 2 each year in
Hastings and St. Leonards - The project has engaged over 6000 participants so
far - There are over 100 sessions per week, which are
advertised in the programme booklet (updated
quarterly) and on the Active Hastings website

13Hastings and Rother Healthwalks
- HR PCT commission BTCV (British Trust for
Conservation Volunteers) to run the Hastings and
Rother Healthwalks - Walking can improve your health, make you feel
more positive, is very sociable and most of all
is free! - Anyone can take part in Healthwalks but the
majority of attendees are older adults - There are currently 8 Healthwalks in Hastings and
Rother

14To Finish
- Sport England Strategy
- (2008-1011)
- Most significant reasons people do not take part
in sport is that they do not consider themselves
to be healthy or fit enough
There must be strong links between sport and PA
as they will provide the platform for many more
people to become involved in sport.
