Title: GRCC Academic Standing Policy
1GRCCAcademic Standing Policy
Maintaining the Standards of Excellence
2Why do we need a policy?
- Required by Michigans Academic Classification
System rulesACS - Ethically valid since some students have no hope
of ever graduating - 2.0 GPA is required to graduate
-
3Current Statement
- Satisfactory Performance
- Students are expected to achieve at least
minimal academic success in their studies at
Grand Rapids Community College. Students who do
not achieve satisfactory grades may be dismissed
after appropriate committee consideration. - GRCC 2006-2007Catalog, page 29
4Proposed Policy
- Will apply to all students regardless of
- Degree status
- Program of Study
- Financial Aid
- Date of initial enrollment
- Will also apply to those who are participating in
academic/support programs and recipients of
veterans benefits.
5Proposed Standards of Satisfactory Academic
Progress
- Once a student attempts 12 credit hours, he/she
must meet BOTH of the following
Minimum Cumulative GPA
Credit Hours Attempted
A.
12 14 1.50
15 28 1.75
29 2.00
6Standards cont.
- B. Students must complete 65 of all credit
hours attempted at GRCC
1. Grades earned between A and D- are
considered passing.
2. Grades of E, I, V, W, WP, WF, and NS are NOT
considered passing and must be considered
attempted grades.
3. If a course is repeated, the lower grade is
not considered passing and the higher one is (if
it matches the qualifiers in Item 1).
4. Non-credit coursework is not considered for
credits attempted or completed.
7Academic Probation
- If the student has attempted 12 credit hours and
does not meet one or both of the criteria
previously stated, they are placed on Academic
Probation. - The student will be notified of their status.
8Academic Probation cont.
- Students on Academic Probation will be required
to - Meet with an academic counselor prior to the
fourth week of the semester/term following
placement on academic probation. A registration
hold will be placed on the students account
until the meeting has occurred. - Collaborate with the counselor/advisor, in the
development of a written success plan. - Obtain a minimum semester GPA of 2.0
- Obtain a passing grade in a minimum of 65 of the
credit hours attempted that semester.
9Academic Suspension
- If in any subsequent semester, the student fails
to meet the requirements of Academic
Probation--2.0 sem. GPA and/or 65 passing
credits--then that student will be placed on
Academic Suspension and is prohibited from
enrolling in classes at GRCC for one calendar
year. - If the student is suspended due to circumstances
beyond their reasonable control, he/she may
appeal their suspension to the Academic Probation
and Suspension Committee w/o having to wait one
calendar year. - The Committees decision is final.
10Readmission from Academic Suspension
- A student may petition the Academic Probation and
Suspension committee for readmission after one
calendar year of non-attendance at GRCC. - If the petition is honored, the student must
follow the committees specific recommendations.
- A student who is readmitted will again be placed
on Academic Probation and must maintain a 2.0 sem
GPA and have a passing grade in at least 65 of
the credits attempted that semester.
11Readmission from Academic Suspension
- If the petition is denied, the student may appeal
to the Dean of Student Affairs following the
Colleges Due Process Procedure. - The Deans decision is final.
