The Heislers
  • Charles and Joann Heisler are local residents of
    Lancaster.
  • They both live at The Glen nursing center in
    Willow Valley.
  • They are both very nice people and really young
    at heart.

4
Problem
  • Mr. Heisler has a disability called MS and it
effects his ability to drive his wheelchair
    effectively.
  • He tends to bump into walls and tables because he
cannot determine the distance between the two.

5
Objective
  • Our team objective is to place sensors on a
electronic wheelchair in order to help vision
impaired personnel to drive better and safer.
  • The sensors will determine how close the
wheelchair is to its surrounding walls.

6
Design Specifications
  • Our design consists of four strategically placed
    Sonar sensors.
  • Two sensors placed in the front and two sensors
    located in the back.

7
Design Specifications
  • The sensors are connected to a micro controller
and a tiny speaker that informs Mr. Heisler when
he is getting too close to the wall.
  • All of these components are powered by the
wheelchairs battery which can be plugged in to
any outlet when needed to be charged.

8
Construction of the Project
  • Phase One
  • Research for best possible solution
  • Create time line and goals
  • Contact the Heislers

9
Construction of the Project
  • Phase Two
  • Meet the Heislers
  • Learn as much as possible about Charles and his
    disability.
  • Examine Mr. Heislers environment
  • Learn how to program code for the sensors
  • Learn how to connect all the components together.

10
Construction of the Project
  • Phase Three
  • Buy microcontroller
  • Buy sensors
  • Buy all the needed wiring and soldering materials
  • Buy speaker/alarm and the on/off switch
  • Create code/program for the micro controller
  • Wire the system

11
Construction of the Project
  • Phase Four
  • Pick up the wheelchair from The Glen nursing
    center
  • Put together the sensors
  • Load code to microprocessor
  • Connect the speakers and sensors to
    microprocessors
  • Connect on/off switch to microprocessor

12
Construction of the Project
  • Phase Four Part Two
  • Mount all components to wheelchair
  • Connect all mounted components to the wheelchair
    battery
  • Testing and critiquing of the sensors and
    wheelchair

13
Budget Our Budget was 450.00
  • The microprocessor and sensors were bought from
    www.parallax.com
  • All supplies was bought from Radio Shack
  • Supplies included
  • Wiring, Switch, Speaker, Soldering Kit,
    Resisters, Capacitors, Diodes, and Boxes
