System Design Guidelines
  • For ease of design, think the 200 coverage
radius as a Cell, 275x275 (75,625 sq ft)
  • Lay the square cells directly onto a floor plan
to determine the number of PIMs required
  • Determine best locations for the PIMs, and adjust
    squares accordingly
  • Test Proposed System Layout (Use TK797
    Pre-Installation test kit)

PIM Placement Guidelines
  • Place in a secure, central location
  • Try to co-locate with the Access Control Panel
  • Remote PIM within 500 for PIM-TD2s, PIM-TD4s
  • Remote PIM within 4000 for PIM-485s
  • Avoid close metal objects
  • Mount at least 6 feet high
  • Consider proximity to access control interface
  • Locate the PIM within 200 of the Wireless
    product
  • Do not design multiple floors to work off one PIM

5
  • Bring to following to ensure optimal PIM
    placement
  • TK797 Pre-installation Test Kit
  • Extension cord
  • Blue painters tape
  • Make it even more portable by using a 9-volt
battery, a battery clip from Radio Shack, and a
    2-pin terminal block.
  • Position the PIM-T tester in the exact location
you plan to install the actual PIM.
  • Orient the PIM as shown in the picture to the
    right.
  • Tape it in place.
  • Apply power.
  • Press the SA button to put the PIM-T in test
    mode.
  • Go to a door you want to test for that PIM and
place the handheld tester above the lever on the
inside (secure side) of the door.
  • With the door closed, press the Tester button and
observe the LED and count the number of RED
blinks. If you get more than 5 red blinks,
    reposition the PIM-T and retest.
  • Repeat step 4 with the Tester in the same
position above the lever, but with the door
    propped open.
  • Repeat step 4 with the Tester in the same
position above the lever, but with the door
    swinging slowly opened and closed.
  • Go to the next door for that PIM and start at
    step 3.
  • Note If you have to move the PIM you must retest
    all the doors.

Pre-installation TestingUsing the TK797
Pre-installation Test Kit, perform these 7 steps
for each Wireless door
6
If you continue to have problems, verify if
there are any barriers.
  • Shielded walls
  • Metal lathe
  • Elevator shafts
  • Metal staircases
  • Ventilation rooms and shafts
  • Massive metal objects
  • Metal clad walls
  • Metal floor pans if trying to span floors
  • Metal lockers
  • Other 900 MHz equipment on site
  • Other options
  • Try an actual PIM and select a different channel.
  • Position the PIM to avoid obstructions and
    retest.
  • This may mean putting the PIM in a hallway.
  • Add a PIM
  • Large obstacles cast a shadow, or void in RF
coverage, which can only be overcome by a PIM on
    either side of the obstacle.
