Prop boxes are designed to encourage children to
engage in socio-dramatic play

Your Prop Boxes should include clothing which
would help children identify with the topic of
your box
Notice the cow costume.
You as an educator need to be ready to model
appropriate attire and behavior.
Plus your costume will get the childrens
attention and motivate them.

Costumes props can include
Wigs
Hats
Aprons
Masks smocks

Your prop box should include authentic items
Real muffin tins baking pans.
Spatulas, rolling pin, salt pepper shakers.
Notice the chart for returning the items for
others to use.
A real fishing net
Thrift stores garage sales are a great resource
for prop box materials

A real pet carrier was picked up at a garage sale.
A forgotten fry basket finds new life. Doggy
bags for left overs.

Language and Literacy Opportunities
You need to provide fiction and non fiction books.
Birthday books, invitations to create, birthday
cards to send.
Signs to label areas materials.

  • List ALL your books - fiction and non fiction
  • Include the author.

Including personal photos will stimulate oral
language development.
Movie posters, food boxes, movie brochures,
increase literacy awareness.
Discarded posters from local merchants provide a
language model and add a sense of authenticity.
Merchants love to help educators if it is easy,
inexpensive, and hassle free. Sending thank
yous to area merchants is VERY appropriate
professional.

You should write your goals and objectives BEFORE
you gather your materials.
What items would need to be added to this prop
box in order to make it a veterinarian prop box?
WHY?
These will help determine WHAT materials you need
to include in your prop box to make it an
authentic learning experience.

Is a goal to help children explore the concept
that packages can be sent and delivered in the
mail?
Is a goal to help children understand that a
person called the Mail Carrier delivers mail to
peoples houses?
Notice the boxes and slotted shelves for
sorting the mail.

Your write up will include a list of vocabulary
words the children may encounter or discover
through this dramatic play experience.

Dont be afraid to try an idea.
Children could create their own lake for fishing
in.
Some felt, some time and the help of friends
roomies, can create pizza fixings.
A travel agent prop box can be a wonderful bridge
to social studies, geography, history (time
travel), etc...

  • Your topic,age/grade level. Why you think this
    has child appeal
  • Your references for all your books,
    resources,fingerplays, poems, AND for your
    fiction non fiction childrens books (minimum
    of 6 total childrens books).
  • Remember how to reference WEB sources.
  • List all the materials needed.
  • Explain how your prop box will encourage writing,
    reading or print awareness, and speaking.

  • DO NOT just write Because EVERY one can be a

  • How can this prop box be adapted to other related
    topics?Or be a bridge in your curriculum?
