Supporting Details
  • Finding Primary and Secondary Supporting Details

3
Supporting Details
Supporting details are facts, reasons, examples,
or testimonies that are given to support the main
idea of a selection. Detail sentences are
classified as either primary (major) supporting
details or secondary (minor) supporting details.
4
Primary Supporting Details
Primary supporting details are sentences that
directly support the main idea of the selection.
These sentences provide facts, examples, reasons
or testimonies that directly support the point
being made about the topic.
5
Secondary Supporting Details
Secondary supporting details are sentences that
further expand one of the primary supporting
details sentences. A secondary supporting detail
DOES NOT HAVE A DIRECT relationship with the main
idea, but rather is included in the passage to
expand an idea presented in the primary
supporting detail. A secondary supporting detail
is a fact, reason, example or testimonial that
expands an idea presented in the primary
supporting detail sentences.

Example One
Whether jaunting away for a quiet romantic
weekend or resting after a long business day, a
hotel is home away from home for overnight
journeyers. Hotels can be classified into
three categories with different categories
appealing to different travelers. The commercial
hotel is usually preferred by the business
traveler for overnight business trips. These
hotels are often located near airports and
downtown areas in large cities. They usually
have banquet and convention facilities as well
as an array of restaurants and shops. Commercial
hotels typically offer recreational activities
such as, gymnasiums and swimming pools for
relaxation.

Example Two
Which vegetables are most nutritionally sound,
frozen or fresh? Many people would answer that
fresh vegetables are the best. The fact is
frozen vegetables can be superior for several
reasons. Time plays a significant factor in
nutritional value. For this reason, fresh or
canned vegetables often lose valuable nutrients
while being shipped from the farm to the market
or cannery. Frozen vegetables are frozen
immediately after being picked and thus retain
their nutrients. Frozen vegetables lend
themselves well to steam preparation. This type
of cooking retains important nutrients within the
vegetables. Finally, frozen vegetables are
clearly labeled with nutritional information.
Fresh vegetables on the other hand carry no type
of labeling.

Example Three
The oil crisis of the 1970s made Americans
realize the need for alternative fuel sources.
While many alternatives have been proposed,
Carroll Buckner has developed an alternative
which has several advantages. Mr. Buckners corn
burning stove is economical. Anyone could grow
their own fuel simply by planting a corn crop.
Even if the corn must be purchased from a
supplier, it is usually inexpensive. Second, the
emissions from the burning corn are nonpolluting.
Finally, the growth in the corn industry brought
about by an increased demand would add jobs to
the struggling agricultural economy.

Example Four
Reactions of people to death vary greatly.
However, all people go through specific stages in
dealing with grief after the death of a loved
one. The first stage is disbelief. Often the
person is so severely shocked that he or she is
unable to believe that the loved one is no longer
alive. This disbelief then turns into a second
stage called denial. A person in denial will
often swear that the person lying in the coffin
is breathing. A period of anger usually follows
in the next stage. The person is angry at the
person for dying and leaving him or her, angry at
the medical community for not doing a competent
job, and angry at himself or herself for past
failures against the loved one. It is during
this stage that many Continued on next slide

people hit rock bottom and must find some way of
dealing with their grief. Finally, the person
enters a period of acceptance. While the time
necessary for entering this stage of grief varies
from person to person, most people are able to
get to this stage after a few months. During
this stage of acceptance, many people turn to
spiritual guidance and meditation to achieve
inner peace.
