Historical background

• 1293 foundation of Vyborg Castle as a result of
  the 3d Swedish crusade (marshal Torkel Knutson)
• 1403 Vyborg got the status of town
• 1527 Vyborg got the status of a staple town
• 1710 Peter the Great conquered Vyborg
• 1917 Finland got the independence (in the
  borders of former Great Autonomic Principality
  of Finland). Vyborg as a part of Finland
• 1940 as a result of Winter war , Vyborg
  became a Soviet town
• 1941 back to Finland again
• 1944 Vyborg has become a soviet town

Twin cities cooperation

• 1987 signing of the first agreement on
  cooperation between Vyborg and Lappeenranta
• 1997 updating of the agreement
• For every coming year responsible persons from
  both towns have been working out the programme
  of mutual activities in different respective
  fields ranging from music festivals and sport
  events to concrete projects and training seminars.
