The Library JDCBumps in the Road
  • Events, including those of fall 2007, undermined
    the foundation of trust that was being built
    however, work on process improvement projects
    continued
  • Events highlighted a clear need to implement IBPS
    processes that will work to resolve conflict at
    all levels

Whats the goal of IBPS in the Library?
  • Strengthen relationships
  • Resolve problems
  • Build desirable skills in all staff
  • Improve communication and understanding of
    interests and decrease grievances
  • Build a better working environment
  • Library Values integrity, respect, excellence,
    creativity and flexibility, open communication

Pilot Project FY 08-09
  • Pilot is to undertake an initial period of
    research and assessment
  • Already acceptance of this approach to conflict
    resolution for the Library
  • Analysis and design of various structural
    components the Pilot

  • Departments self-select or are asked to
    participate
  • All staff in participating departments receive
    training
  • Assessment active on-going part of pilot
    metrics to be determined
  • Determination at end of pilot on best processes
    for Library-wide use

Library IBPS - What does it do? Not do?
  • Provides a framework and tool set to be used
    during conversations that will/should happen
    anyway due to gripes or grievances
  • Some will say I do this already didnt know
    it was IBPS.
  • Library IBPS is not a big new bureaucracy - new
    structures and processes at a minimum by design
    as competency grows -gt formal processes decrease

  • 1. Informal attempt to resolve issues among staff
    who have been trained in IBPS
  • 2. Formal attempt to resolve with wider
    participation, facilitation and paper trail for
    participants
  • 3. Peer Review Panel

  • 1. Request to Library JDC
  • 2. Task force of JDC members addresses issue
  • 3. Best Practices Review Panel if appropriate
    (University BP Policy Board)

Library IBPS - What does it do? Not do?
  • IBPS does not take away a managers right to
    discipline an employee but provides a mechanism
    for discussion so the number of grievances
    declines as the result of an understanding of
    interests nor does it take away an employees
    right to grieve.
  • Intended to be used by all staff peer-to-peer,
    departmental issues, etc

  • Presentation to Library Management Council
    (department heads and AULs) well received.
  • Overview at Supervisory Discussion Group for
    non-LMC managers
  • One-on-One discussions to encourage participation
    and douse concerns
  • Tie-in to Diversity Training it all requires
    conversation

  • Union members meeting with Communications Group
  • One-on-one conversations to douse fears/concerns
  • Visits to department meetings of participating
    departments (TBD) by IBPS Task Force membership
