Title: Macbeth
1Macbeth
2Page 87
In this part of the scene, Macbeth is talking to
the two murderers and convincing them that Banquo
is a bad man and that he is the person to blame
for their troubles. Then he convinces them to
murder him.
3Page 81 and 83
Banquo - (talking about Macbeth) you have it all,
being King, Thane of Cawdor and Thane of Glamis
and you did dishonorable deeds, such as killing
Duncan, to get these titles, but I am going to be
the father of many kings Macbeth and Lady Macbeth
- holding a ceremonial dinner and they are
requesting Banquos presence
This is basically just small talk between Banquo
and Macbeth, talking about how long Banquos ride
home is. There is also mention of their
parricidal (killing of close family members)
cousins in England and Ireland. Banquo and
Fleance leave.
Macbeth is trying to get information out of
Banquo about his ride home so that he can ambush
him with the three murderers and kill him.
4Page 85 - Macbeths Speech
Macbeth says that to be king is nothing without
being safe. He states that there is no one but
Banquo that he fears, this is because Banquos
prophecies say that he will father sons that will
be king, and Macbeth is afraid that these sons
will do what he himself did to get the throne. He
is afraid of both Banquos personality and his
sons. Banquos mind is very strong, and he has
ambition, but he wont do anything to jeopardize
his safety. Macbeth thinks that Banquo is smarter
than he is. The allusion to Marc Antony and
Caesar is saying that Banquo (Marc Antony) looks
a lot smarter than he (Macbeth/Caesar) does.
When the witches give the prophecy to Macbeth,
Banquo chides them but then asks for a prophecy
for himself. This is when the witches tell him
that he will father a line of kings. Macbeth
realizes that he has given his soul to the Devil
by murdering Duncan just so Banquos sons will be
the future Kings. In the last line, he says give
me the fate I deserve.
5Page 89
At the bottom of the previous page, Macbeth
starts a speech in which he says that there are
many different types of men, just like there are
many different types of dogs. Each type is
determined by what they are good at. Macbeth uses
this explanation to talk to the murderers about
how he wants them to do what they are good at,
and if that is killing, then he will hire them
and love them for that skill. Then the
murderers each explain what kind of person they
are. Murderer 2 when I am hurt by the world, I
hate it and want to spite it
Murderer 1 I am so wearied by my
misfortune that I would take any chance I could
get to make my life better. Macbeth then tells
the murderers that Banquo is his, and their,
enemy and that Macbeth would kill him himself,
but I have to lie and say how tragic his death
is, and if I killed him myself, that would be
hard to do.
6Page 91
Macbeth tells the murderers their courage shows
and that he will tell them where and when they
will attack Banquo. It should be far away from
the castle, so Im not suspected, and make it
clean - dont leave any evidence. Kill Fleance,
Banquos son, also. Go decide if you will do this
or not. The murderers will do it and Macbeth
tells them that he will call them in a little
while, then he talks to himself saying that
Banquos soul, if it is going to heaven, will go
there tonight.
