About Us
  • We would like to interest you in a most
    commendable undertaking and heartrending
endeavor the rehabilitation of disabled Israelis
    through participation in sports.
  • Some 650,000 people, roughly 12 of Israels
    population, suffer from physical disabilities.
These horrifying numbers attest to three main
factors wars, road accidents and crippling
    maladies from birth.
  • Adding to our tragedy, over the last four years
terrorism has dramatically increased our already
    swollen ranks of disabled Israelis.

4
  • The Israel Sports Association for the Disabled
(ISAD) is the forerunner of a robust national
effort to revitalize our incapacitated citizens
through physical training at various facilities.
  • We are the official Israeli Paralympic committee
which is parallel to the Olympic committee of
    Israel.
  • ISAD runs fifteen sports programs for the
    physically challenged sailing, swimming,
    athletics, basketball, weightlifting, shooting,
    fencing, hand cycling, horseback riding,
    wheelchair tennis, table tennis, archery,
    volleyball, goal ball and badminton.

5
  • These activities culminate in Israels
    participation in the international Paralympic
Games, which are held every four years shortly
    after the Olympics.
  • ISAD is the only national umbrella organization
for sport activities for all the disabled
    organizations in Israel today.

6
Athens 2004
  • Recently, our Israeli team of disabled athletes
who participated in the Athens 2004 Paralympics
warmed the hearts of many Israelis when they
returned home with 4 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze
    medals.
  • Our achievements were rewarded with praise from
President Moshe Katzav, Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon, Limor Livnat, Minister of Education,
Culture and Sport and other national sports
    figures.

Preparations for Paralympics Beijing 2008
  • In the afterglow of Athens 2004, ISAD has already
begun preparations for Beijing 2008. The
continued success of our national team depends
largely on outside support to finance our
    athletes' training, equipment, facilities and
    transportation expenses.
  • We hope to send a team of 50 athletes and
    trainers.
  • Our athletes undying dream is to hear the
sounding of the Hatikva the next time a member of
the Israeli team wins a gold medal at the
    Paralympics.
  • Due to the Israeli Government's budget cutbacks,
our disabled athletes do not enjoy the financial
backing they so richly deserve, and have to rely
on outside support to pay for training
    facilities, coaches, equipment and transportation
    expenses.
  • For this reason, ISAD seeks your
participation and of Jewish communities and
    philanthropic organizations worldwide.
  • We ask you to help them realize that dream, and
thank you for your kind consideration of our
    request.

17
  • The story of our physically challenged sports
heroes who returned triumphantly from the
Paralympics held in Athens, Greece is both
    heartrending and inspiring.
  • It is a classic tale of the triumph of the human
    spirit over seemingly undefeatable physical
    obstacles.
  • It is a saga that needs to be told and retold,
both to Israelis and to Diaspora Jews.

18
Do You Know That..
  • Israels Paralympics heritage is one of the
    vital
  • characteristics of our small state, which
    prides itself at
  • overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds.
  • Our disabled athletes have set a high
standard they were winning medals at Paralympic
events long before our able-bodied athletes won a
    single medal.
  • For example, our disabled athletes returned
from the 1988 Seoul games with such a proud
display of gold, silver and bronze, that many
Israelis questioned, .Why can't we do that
in the Olympics?. In more recent Olympics, we
found out that we most surely can.
  • Which only leads one to conclude that our
disabled sports heroes, with the support of
ISAD,have set a most uncommon and wonderful
    example for
  • all Israeli athletes.
