PROJECT INTENT
  • The School Board wants to build a new school for
its St-Denis school students. The intent is to
do so in the most responsible way possible.

WHY TWO REZONING APPLICATIONS ?
  • Further to a public meeting held with parents of
St-Denis, it was made clear that this Centennial
Drive location is advantageously located for
    their new school
  • As a result, the School Board was directed to
    resubmit rezoning applications accordingly
  • The application for lots 1 13 is being
resubmitted as there was information either
missing or not clear in the initial application.
Secondly, we are building a school with public
funding. We are accountable to do so in the most
cost effective manner as not to waste public
funds. It is estimated that this first option of
building on lots 1 13 will save the taxpayer
    some 700,000

WHY A NEW SCHOOL ?
  • The area servicing the current St-Denis school
    is experiencing growth
  • The age of the school sections are prohibitive
    to repair
  • The site requires extensive upgrades
    renovations
  • The St-Denis site is too small for current
    future needs
  • The noise levels from Regent Street are too
    high, thus disturbing the students
  • Given the traffic flow on Regent Street there
exists a safety concern for children walking to
    and from school
  • Parents have requested that their children be
educated in a modern and up to date facility

THE BENEFITS THE NEW SCHOOL WILL BRING TO THE
COMMUNITY
  • Injection of 12 million dollars into the local
construction economy translating into sales by
    businesses jobs for workers
  • A school that incorporates the latest technology
and programs for the education of the children
  • A school that allows children to benefit from
    the neighbourhood amenities. These include
  • - The James Jerome Sports Complex playing fields
  • - The Lily Creek boardwalk
  • - A new fish habitat
  • - A new boardwalk along Nepahwin Creek
  • - Science North
  • - Imax
  • - Laurentian University
  • - Partnerships with the Hospital and local
    senior residents

36
THE BENEFITS THE NEW SCHOOL WILL BRING TO THE
COMMUNITY
  • Reduced traffic speed and flow on Centennial
Drive, this as a result of Centennial Drive
becoming a school zone and the speed being
    reduced to 40 km/h
  • A new 4-way stop at the corner of Ramsey View
Court and Centennial Drive forcing local traffic
    to slow down and stop
  • As per the experience of Walford Road, the
reduced speed should result in a decrease of
traffic, especially for those who use Centennial
Drive to cut across to access Paris and Regent
    Streets
  • The school will provide parking spaces that
will be available by users of the James Jerome
Sports Complex playing fields. This should
significantly reduce the on street parking on
    Centennial Drive

37
THE BENEFITS THE NEW SCHOOL WILL BRING TO THE
COMMUNITY
  • The school will have exterior playing fields,
basketball courts, volleyball courts and play
structures for the neighbourhood kids to enjoy
  • The school and all its amenities such as
gymnasium will be available for use by the
    neighbourhood residents
  • A new day care center will form part of the new
    school project
  • The property which is currently privately owned,
will become a very public site available to the
    entire community and local residents

38
THE BENEFITS THE NEW SCHOOL WILL BRING TO THE
COMMUNITY
  • The project will enhance the existing wetland
area. The proposed project will replace the
current wetland with a newly constructed and
permanent fish habitat. While the existing
wetland provides little, if any, fish habitat, as
it often dries up in the summer, the new fish
habitat will be permanent and wet all year long
and will allow for the annual spawning of local
fish from Nepahwin Creek. In addition, the
habitat will become an area for various plant,
insect and bird species to live.
  • This project will become the example of a
    restored natural environment
  • The school will be a model in the community on
how we can construct a school in harmony with
    nature
