through ongoing participation in state and local
    initiatives.

3
Where are we now?
  • Committed to continuous improvement.
  • Poised to enter a significant renovation project.
  • Involved in key initiatives that provide
    resources and training.

    addressing students needs.

4
Public Trust
5
  • The best case for public education has always
been that it is a common good. Everyone
ultimately has a stake in the caliber of schools
and education is everyones business. The quality
of the public education system relates directly
to the quality of life that people enjoy (whether
as parents, employers, or citizens), with a
strong public education system as the cornerstone
of a civil, prosperous, and democratic society.
  • As the main institution for fostering social
cohesion in an increasingly diverse society,
publicly funded schools must serve all children,
not simply those with the loudest or most
powerful advocates. This means addressing the
cognitive and social needs of all childrenand
must include citizenship and what some people
    call character education.
  • - Michael Fullan in The Moral Imperative of
    School Leadership, (2003)

Mission
  • The mission of the Newport School District is to
educate students to be responsible, motivated
citizens who will contribute to the betterment of
the local and global community and become
lifelong learners successfully coping with the
    changing world.

7
Vision
  • Enter to Learn
  • Go Forth to Serve
  • Continue to Learn

8
Values
  • We believe learning is a life-long process.
  • We believe everyone is capable of learning.
  • We believe our schools should provide the
opportunity for successful learning for all
    students.
  • We believe students learn in different ways
therefore, a variety of delivery systems are
    needed to accommodate the various
    student-learning styles.
  • We believe parents, family, teachers, school
    personnel, and community involvement enhance
    student learning.
  • We believe honesty, integrity, responsibility,
and respect for others are essential components
in character development and should permeate our
    school environment.

9
Values
  • We believe learning requires individual
    responsibility and accountability.
  • We believe technology is an integral took in the
    learning process therefore, current technology
needs to be available and utilized by students
    and teachers.
  • We believe all schools need to be safe and
    positive places of learning.
  • We believe our school needs fair and consistent
    disciplinary measures.
  • We believe students need to learn of the unique
benefits provided by a democratic, free society,
    including the rights, responsibilities, and
participation opportunities that are inherent in
    United States citizenship.
  • We believe the School District needs to provide
and support its educational program in a fiscally
    responsible manner.
  • We believe effective teaching is the core of
education and should be expected, respected,
    encouraged, and supported.

10
Values
  • We believe an ongoing program of staff
development is essential to achieve and maintain
academic excellence and to accomplish the goals
    of the Strategic Plan.
  • We believe assessment of all staff members, all
students, and all programs is essential to
monitor progress on accomplishing the goals of
    the Strategic Plan.
  • We believe the School District has a
responsibility to address the needs of the total
child, through both the academic program and a
    wide range of extra-curricular activities.
  • We believe early intervention is an essential
component for meeting individual student needs.
  • We believe the resources of the School District
should be available to all residents of the
District to the extent reasonable, possible and
    financially appropriate.

Rules About Goals
  • ALL GOALS ARE BUILT UPON TWO SIMPLE RULES DO
YOUR BEST AND TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WISH TO BE
TREATED. CONSIDER EVERY DECISION YOU MAKE IN
LIGHT OF TWO QUESTIONS. 1) HOW WILL IT IMPACT
THOSE IMMEDIATELY AFFECTED AND 2) HOW WILL IT
    IMPACT THE DISTRICT AT LARGE.
  • MOST IMPORTANTLY BE HONEST AND LEARN TO TRUST ONE
ANOTHER. A TRUSTWORTHY KIND PERSONS MISTAKES
ARE QUITE OFTEN FORGIVEN MUCH MORE QUICKLY AND
WITH LESS DIRE CONSEQUENCES THAN SOMEONE WHO IS
    UNTRUSTWORTHY AND MEAN.
  • REMEMBER THERE IS POLICY AND PROCEDURE FOR JUST
ABOUT EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN BUT IT ALL CAN BE
SUMMED UP IN A FEW THOUGHTSBE SUBJECT TO
AUTHORITY, BE OBEDIENT TO LAWS, BE ALWAYS READY
TO DO GOOD, SLANDER NO ONE, BE PEACEABLE,
CONSIDERATE, HUMBLE, AND DIGINIFED. WE WERE
CALLED TO SERVE OTHERS FIRST, THEN OURSELVES.
