CONFRONTATION The arc of History
God out of Love Creates a good Creation Humanity
Rebels against love and plunge themselves and
the good creation into a state of
alienation. God puts a plan in motion to undo
the alienation and rebellion through the call of
Abraham. Abrahams call is for the whole world.
Abrahams descendants have the human problem
and rebel, and instead of being a blessing to the
nations behave as the other nations.

CONFRONTATION IDOLATRY
1 Some of the elders of Israel came to me and
sat down in front of me. 2 Then the word of the
LORD came to me 3 "Son of man, these men have
set up idols in their hearts and put wicked
stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let
them inquire of me at all? 4 Therefore speak to
them and tell them, 'This is what the Sovereign
LORD says When any Israelite sets up idols in
his heart and puts a wicked stumbling block
before his face and then goes to a prophet, I the
LORD will answer him myself in keeping with his
great idolatry. - Ezekiel 14

CONFRONTATION
Religious Show
The Lord says "These people come near to me with
their mouth and honor me with their lips, but
their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me
is based on merely human rules they have been
taught. Isaiah 2913

CONFRONTATION
Religious Elitism - Privilege 1 The word of the
LORD came to me 2 "Son of man, prophesy against
the shepherds of Israel prophesy and say to
them 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says Woe
to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of
yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the
flock? 3 You eat the curds, clothe yourselves
with the wool and slaughter the choice animals,
but you do not take care of the flock. 4 You have
not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or
bound up the injured. You have not brought back
the strays or searched for the lost. You have
ruled them harshly and brutally. 5 So they were
scattered because there was no shepherd, and when
they were scattered they became food for all the
wild animals.

CONFRONTATION
Oppression of the Poor
1 Woe to those who make unjust laws,        to
those who issue oppressive decrees,     2 to
deprive the poor of their rights        and
withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,
       making widows their prey        and
robbing the fatherless.
8
CONFRONTATION EXILE
15 The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word
to them through his messengers again and again,
because he had pity on his people and on his
dwelling place. 16 But they mocked God's
messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his
prophets until the wrath of the LORD was aroused
against his people and there was no remedy. 17 He
brought up against them the king of the
Babylonians, who killed their young men with the
sword in the sanctuary, and spared neither young
man nor young woman, old man or aged. God handed
all of them over to Nebuchadnezzar. 18 He carried
to Babylon all the articles from the temple of
God, both large and small, and the treasures of
the LORD's temple and the treasures of the king
and his officials. 2 Chronicles 36

COMFORT
A Descendant of David will become King
5 The days are coming, declares the LORD,
"when I will raise up to David a
righteous Branch,        a King who will reign
wisely Jeremiah 10 1
10
COMFORT
The Spirit of God will be poured on all
28 "And afterward,        I will pour out my
Spirit on all people.        Your sons and
daughters will prophesy,        your old men
will dream dreams,        your young men will
see visions.     29 Even on my servants, both
men and women,        I will pour out my Spirit
in those days. Joel 2
11
COMFORT
Good News will be preached to the poor and
captive
1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.        He has
sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,        to
proclaim freedom for the captives        and
release from darkness for the prisoners,
Isaiah 61
12
COMFORT
There will be a renewal of Creation 25 The wolf
and the lamb will feed together,        and the
lion will eat straw like the ox,        Isaiah

13
COMFORT
There will be forgiveness of sins 34 No longer
will a man teach his neighbor,        or a man
his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,'
because they will all know me,        from the
least of them to the greatest,"        declares
the LORD.        "For I will forgive their
wickedness        and will remember their sins
no more."        Jeremiah 31
1
14
COMFORT
All nations will be drawn to the true God 20
This is what the LORD Almighty says "Many
peoples and the inhabitants of many cities will
yet come, 21 and the inhabitants of one city will
go to another and say, 'Let us go at once to
entreat the LORD and seek the LORD Almighty. I
myself am going.' 22 And many peoples and
powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek
the LORD Almighty and to entreat him."     23
This is what the LORD Almighty says "In those
days ten men from all languages and nations will
take firm hold of one Jew by the hem of his robe
and say, 'Let us go with you, because we have
heard that God is with you.' "

Applying ourselves to Gods Story
Hearing the whole story summed up in
Christ 17"Do not think that I have come to
abolish the Law or the Prophets I have not come
to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18I tell you
the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not
the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a
pen, will by any means disappear from the Law
until everything is accomplished.

Applying ourselves to Gods Story
Forgiveness is available 46 He told them, "This
is what is written The Messiah will suffer and
rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and
repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be
preached in his name to all nations, beginning at
Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.
49 I am going to send you what my Father has
promised but stay in the city until you have
been clothed with power from on high." Luke

Applying ourselves to Gods Story
Or telling of Gods story must still be good news
for the poor and oppressed 18"The Spirit of the
Lord is on me,       because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.    He
has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
   to release the oppressed,        19to
proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Luke

Applying ourselves to Gods Story
We must do whatever we can to welcome the
outsider 7Accept one another, then, just as
Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to
God. 8For I tell you that Christ has become a
servant of the Jews on behalf of God's truth, to
confirm the promises made to the patriarchs 9so
that the Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy,
as it is written    "Therefore I will praise
you among the Gentiles       I will sing hymns
to your name. 10Again, it says,    "Rejoice, O
Gentiles, with his people. 11And again,
"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and sing praises to him, all you peoples.
Romans 15
