Akers takes the helm

• 1985 John F. Akers became chief executive officer
  of IBM
• 1986 John assumed the additional position of
  chairman of the board
• October-December 1992 IBM lost 5.5 billion early
  retirements, production-line shutdowns
• IBM lost 45 million on day-to-day operations in
  the quarter, the first time that revenues have
  failed to cover operating expenses.

• Louis V. Gerstner, Jr., was named chairman and
  chief executive officer of IBM on April 1, 1993.
• 60,000 layoffs were ordered by Gerstner.
• Gerstner helps rebuild IBM back to being a great
  company again.
