  • Archetypal Symbols are characters, themes,
    motifs, and plot elements stored in the
    collective unconscious. Archetypal symbols
    compose the worlds stories, myths, religions,
    literature, dreams, and art. They articulate the
    human experience the dreams and fears shared by
    all mankind
  • Also known as universal symbols
  • Collective Unconscious A genetically inherited
    level of the mind that contains and responds to
    all archetypes. It is present from the moment of
    birth.

  • Destroyer the bad guy often has a troubled
    past.
  • Star-crossed lovers the couple joined by love
    but separated by fate.
  • Outcast has left or been cast out of society.
  • Wise Old Man represents Knowledge and Wisdom
  • Wise Old Woman a guide and authority figure. A
    form of the Mother Goddess.

  • Lost Soul a tormented being who lives in
    solitude.

  • The Quest The character or characters are
    looking for something.
  • The Task and the Quest are not mutually
    exclusivethe Task is often the end goal of the
    Quest.
