Title: How to be a good class buddy
1For the first few weeks
How to be a good
Make sure your new friend does not get lost or
lonely. Help him or her remember when you have
activities like P.E. or swimming. Do you speak
the same language? If you can, you will be able
to explain things and help to translate some
words into English. Perhaps there is someone
else in school who can help. Tell your teacher if
you think the new pupil is unhappy or finding
something difficult or if anyone is being unkind.

2On the first day
Thank you for offering to help ________
in his/her first few weeks at our
school. Welcoming a new pupil is a very
important and responsible job, so thank you for
accepting the challenge. It can be very strange
and frightening starting at a new school,
especially if you cant speak English or if
people do things differently from what you are
used to. So ___________ will need your help and
support. You might find it hard work too, but
fun, trying to explain things. You might have to
use your hands and face more than usual to
explain things or draw quick pictures. Remember,
we are all here to help.
- Introduce yourself to _________and learn his/her
name. Explain that you will be looking after
him/her. - 2 Introduce some of you friends. Wear name
badges if you can. Learn to say hello in the
new pupils language. - 3. Help the new pupil to learn important words
we use every day in school. Imagine you were a
new pupil. What would you want to know first? - 4. Take the new pupil on a tour of the school.
Make sure he/she knows where the dining hall and
toilets are. - 5. Look after the new pupil during playtime and
lunch. He/she might not be used to school
dinners or eating a packed lunch in a noisy hall! - 6. Tell or show him/her about classroom
routines such as lining up for assembly.
