Population Issues
  • World population 6,302,309,691

  • That equals roughly 128.5 million people living
    in poverty.
  • CIA World Fact-book

6
Overpopulation in urban areas
  • The problems of urban air pollution are derived
largely from the combustion of poor quality coal
of high-sulfur content for heat and electricity
    generation.
  • inefficient use of energy,
  • lack of emission controls, and
  • the discharge of pollutants close to ground
level, particularly in the case of the domestic
    use of coal.

7
  • Today these big stacks spew out a great amount
of pollution helping to blanket the town and the
river valley with a shield of dust, carcinogens
and sulfur dioxide which effectively prevents the
sun and thus light to penetrate.

The Economy
  • In late 1978 the Chinese leadership began moving
the economy from a sluggish, Soviet-style
centrally planned economy to a more
    market-oriented system.

10
Economic Results Since 1978
  • The result has been a quadrupling of GDP since
1978. In 2003, with its 1.3 billion people but a
GDP of just 5,000 per capita, China stood as the
second-largest economy in the world after the US
(measured on a purchasing power parity basis).

Whats the problem with Taiwan?
A LITTLE HISTORY
  • At the end of WWII, Taiwan was turned over to the
    Chinese from the Japanese.
  • the island became the last refuge of the
    Kuomintang (Chinese nationalist) forces, which
were pushed off the mainland by communists in
    1949.

14
Whats the problem with Taiwan?
  • The Democratic Progressive party is in power in
Taiwan under the president Chen Shui-bian
  • The Communist party is in power in China under
    president Hu Jintao.
  • China threatens war with Taiwan-November 2003
  • They threaten war in order to gain control over
the island after politicians in Taiwan start
    moving toward formal independence.

15
Results in the Taiwan conflict
  • Taiwan has made great progress toward their quest
for independence, but the people remain under the
Chinese rule, and by 2006 they will have over 650
missiles pointed at them by the Chinese.
  • China has increased security and missile stations
along the coastline with Taiwan, aiming more and
more missiles at them by the year.

Whats the problem with the ETIM?
  • East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM).

19
Who Are They?
  • A small, militant Muslim separatist group based
in China's western Xinjiang province's vast,
thinly populated region that shares borders with
    several countries, including Afghanistan and
    Pakistan.
  • Beijing has outlawed ETIM for a decade.

20
Ok, so nobody likes the ETIM?
  • So everyone outlawed the ETIM, so what?
  • The Chinese government has been heavily
criticized for suppressing the peoples right to
    worship whoever they choose.
  • The danger is that any religious repression by
the authorities could stoke bitter resentment
    against Chinese rule.

21
Does ETIM Have Ties To Al Qaeda?
  • U.S. and Chinese officials say it does, but some
experts are less sure. The State Department
reports that the ETIM has a close financial
relationship with Osama bin Laden's terror
    network.
