Metal Casting IOF
  • DEP began working with Penn State University as
    the academic lead of the PA Metal Casting IOF in
    2001.
  • Penn State University has combined the IOF
    effort with its Cast Metal Industrial Advisory
    Committee (CMIAC).
  • The Pennsylvania Foundry Association and its key
    member companies have played a key role in the
    PAIOF Metal Casting initiative. .
  • In 2002 Metal Casting produced its PAIOF Vision
    Statement.
  • PSU developed an online continuous road mapping
    website for the PA Metal Casting IOF.
  • Penn State and the Metal Casting group will
    present a draft version of their roadmap at
    todays action team session.

Aluminum IOF
  • DEP began working with Lehigh University as the
    academic lead of the PA Aluminum IOF in March
    2002.
  • Lehigh combined its IOF with the activities of
    its Institute of Metal Forming.
  • Lehigh has hosted two IOF work group sessions at
    the Universitys Institute of Metal Forming.
  • The Aluminum IOF is currently drafting their
    roadmap and vision statements.
  • Aluminum IOF action team will discuss recycling
    market development in Pennsylvania and present
    its draft roadmap and vision at todays action
    team session.

Mining IOF
  • DEP recently began working with the University
    of Pittsburgh as the academic lead of the PA
    Mining IOF in Nov. 2002.
  • Focus on Coal Mining.
  • Coal Mining IOF has formed an advisory board.
  • Chairman,George Ellis, President of the
    Pennsylvania Coal Association.
  • Developed "Potential Areas of Focus" for the
    Pa.Coal Mining IOF.
  • The Pa. Coal Mining IOF sector will discuss these
    areas of focus today at their action team
    session.
  • A May workshop at the University of Pittsburgh
    will develop a roadmap for the entire Pa. Coal
    Mining sector.

PAIOF - Projects
  • 2002 Pennsylvania Environmental and Energy
    Challenge Grant (PEEC)
  • Metalcasting Best Practice won the single largest
    PEEC Grant.
  • Pa. Metalcasting IOF group will provide effective
    deployment of innovative metalcasting best
    practices for energy efficiency, pollution
    prevention and technology development in Pa.
    metalcasting companies.

    Processing.
  • Cleaner air inside the foundry while increasing
    the sand recycling system recovery rate and
    reducing waste disposal to the landfill.
  • Successes to date
  • Approximately 1,000 - 2,000 tons of clay, coal,
    and green sand waste will be kept from disposal
    per year.
  • Penn State is conducting tests to calculate the
    reduction in emissions.
  • Visible emissions in the foundry have been
    reduced dramatically.
