WHY ARE WE HERE ? 1 Peter 29 But you are a
chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,
a people belonging to God, that you may declare
the praises of him who called you out of darkness
into his wonderful light.
7
NEW WORLD ORDER !! Rev 7 I looked again. I saw a
huge crowd, too huge to count. Everyone was there
all nations and tribes, all races and
languages. And they were standing, dressed in
white robes and waving palm branches, standing
before the Throne and the Lamb and heartily
singing..

WESTMINSTER SHORTER CATECHISM Mans chief end is
to glorify God and enjoy him for ever A
foretaste. Having believed, you were marked in
him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is
a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the
redemption of those who are Gods possession- to
the praise of his glory. Eph 113-14
9
  • WHO ARE WE WORSHIPPING ?
  • Is our worship more about who we are or who He is
    ?

10
  • FOR WHOSE BENEFIT ??
  • Most discussion/debate re worship centres around
    preferences of style..
  • So you could be forgiven for thinking that
worship is organised for the benefit and pleasure
    of the participants !
  • Worship is for God !!!
  • Psalm 149 3-4 Let them praise His name with
dancing let them sing praises to Him with
timbrel and lyre. For the Lord takes pleasure in
    his people
  • God could quite reasonably just demand it..but
he enables it to be a relationship that also
provides our most important experience in life !!!

11
  • Worship Worth-ship
  • i.e. the value placed on something/someone
  • How do we value other humans ?
  • How do we value other things ?
  • Whether we like it or not, our true worship is
expressed by our moment by moment actions that
expose our true priorities and personal value
systems, and not by our conscious attempts at
    worship.

12
ASSEMBLED WORSHIP THROUGH SCRIPTURE OT set
patterns and rituals The tabernacle in the
desert The temple in Jerusalem The Psalms NT
the tearing of the veil Us as temples ! Key
passages Exodus 4034, Hebrews 81, 2
Cor 312, and learn the process/imagery
13
  • The word WORSHIP in the New Testament
  • 59 appearances by the Greek word proskyneo, as
opposed to just single appearances of other words
    !
  • Proskyneo to come towards and kiss (usually a
    hand)
  • So something visible is happening (bending low)
  • And something invisible, (humility/reverence/respe
    ct/love)

14
  • WHO DOES IT ?
  • Everyone worships, whether or not they realise
    it.
  • It is our nature to worship a God-given drive,
but as a fallen race, we replace the object of
    our worship
  • the way we live and behave makes evident the
things we love and give ourselves to
  • The heart of worship is giving. Not just of our
talents and possessions but of our very selves.

15
Romans 121 Therefore I urge you brothers, in
view of Gods mercy, to offer your bodies as
living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-
which is your spiritual worship. NB no
distinction between the physical and spiritual
parts of our lives ! They are all one. Living
sacrifices ? Is that not a contradiction ? To
the Jewish mindset it certainly would have been.
This gives some sense of the totality required
in our worship for the Jews a sacrifice could
not be a sacrifice until it was dead !!
16
Romans 611-13 Count yourselves dead to sin but
alive to God in Christ Jesus. Do not offer the
parts of your body to sin, as instruments of
wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as
those who have been brought from death to life
and offer the parts of your body to him as
instruments of righteousness. REPENTANCE AS
WORSHIP A sinful act is worship of the wrong
kind, submitting to the appetites of our pride or
lust, so repentance is really a transfer of our
worship back to one who rightfully owns it.
17
Proskyneo misused.. Luke 47 Satan is tempting
Jesus in the wilderness, and uses proskyneo when
offering him the kingdoms of the world. His
temptation is a perfect allegory for the things
of this world that we are tempted to worship. It
takes a conscious act of will, to resist, obey
and serve, and this is the root of our
worship. Feelings and the joy of being forgiven
follow on as a consequence of our
reunion. Worship is not a feeling that comes
upon you
18
  • JESUS his example
  • Was he worshipping God more when healing the sick
than when banging in nails ?
  • Was he more holy when preaching than when mucking
    around with his mates ?
  • We forget so easily the fact that he had 30 years
in a beaten-up town called Nazareth the daily
grind and sweat, the meals, the same faces day-in
    and day-out.
  • Even in his last 3 years, he experienced extreme
    tiredness, betrayal and laughter.

19
Luke 322 This is my Son, whom I love with you
I am well pleased. At this point his ministry
hasnt started, so we must presume God the Father
was speaking of his pleasure at Jesus whole life
of worship in the mundane-ness of his Nazareth
life. His whole life WAS worship. Lev 192 Be
holy, because I the Lord your God am holy
20
  • Matt 2636 Gethsemane
  • This one incident vividly illustrates Jesus
    worship of God
  • The truth about us is shown when were under
pressure our true character peeks out !
  • being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly
  • yet not what I will, but what you will
  • Obedience is true worship.

21
John 423 God is spirit, and his worshippers
must worship in spirit and in truth. Worshippin
g in truth also requires more than just a warm,
fuzzy feeling.
22
  • Renewing our minds in worship
  • Rom 121 Do not conform any longer to the
pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
    renewing of your mind.
  • Each time we set aside for praising God
intellectually and spiritually, we shake off more
    of that pattern.
  • 1 Cor 1415 I will pray with my spirit but I
will also pray with my mind I will sing with my
spirit but I will also sing with my mind.

23
Worship and community Right relationships are
key to a worshipping community. Pews do not
exactly help this ! Privatised worship pilgrims
v. tourist Matt 523-24 If you are offering
your gift at the altar and there remember that
your brother has something against you, leave the
gift there in front of the altar. First go and be
reconciled to your brother then come and offer
your gift. Note who makes the first move !!!!
24
Forgiveness brings release in worship.
25
  • Eph 519 Speak to one another with psalms,
hymns and spiritual songs. and again 1 Cor14 -
When you come together, everyone has a hymn..
  • So there is also a horizontal aspect to our
community worship aswell as a vertical aspect !
  • Coming to give rather than coming to get!

26
  • Whether we like it or not, our worshipping
informs our theology, and we are creatures driven
by habit, so there are pitfalls.
  • Many modern worship songs have the singer as the
focus, with God as a helpful participant. This
has led people into greater intimacy in worship,
but if it is our staple diet, with nothing else,
then our worship becomes self-centred, and it is
all about what God can do for us.
  • We can become more like God when declaring the
wonders of HIS character, and often our problems
slip into perspective when seen in the light of
    his glory.
  • CHECK OUT THE PSALMS FOR A PERFECT BALANCE !!!!!!!
