8Preparation for Worship
One design of God in the gospel is to bring us
to Him, so that He may be our All in All.  It is
natural for the creature to admire and worship
the Lord and Sovereign, but not natural to have
such a one as a friend, to love and delight in as
a companion. But this is how God has designed our
redemption. He had to come down to us, taken our
nature, and become one of us. Then He could
become our friend, brother, and companion. -
Jonathan Edwards, The Excellency of Christ, 1736
9Call to Worship
- While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table
in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a
woman came with an alabaster jar of very
expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke
the jar and poured the perfume on his head. - - Mark 143

11The Churchs One FoundationWords Samuel J.
Stone Music Samuel Wesley
- The church's one foundation
- is Jesus Christ her Lord
- she is his new creation
- by water and the Word.
- From heaven he came and sought her
- to be his holy bride
- with his own blood he bought her,
- and for her life he died.

12Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the
earth her charter of salvation, one Lord, one
faith, one birth one holy name she blesses,
partakes one holy food, and to one hope she
presses, with every grace endued.
2/5
13Though with a scornful wonder we see her sore
oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies
distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping
their cry goes up, "How long?" And soon the
night of weeping shall be the morn of song.
3/5
14Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,
she waits the consummation of peace
forevermore till, with the vision glorious,
her longing eyes are blest, and the great
church victorious shall be the church at rest.
4/5
15Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three
in One, and mystic sweet communion with those
whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord,
give us grace that we like them, the meek and
lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

18Sermon Text Genesis 181-15
1 The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great
trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the
entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. 2
Abraham looked up and saw three men standing
nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the
entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low
to the ground. 3 He said, "If I have found favor
in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant
by. 4 Let a little water be brought, and then you
may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.
5 Let me get you something to eat, so you can be
refreshed and then go on your waynow that you
have come to your servant." Â Â Â Â Â
19Sermon Text Genesis 181-15
"Very well," they answered, "do as you say." 6 So
Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. "Quick,"
he said, "get three seahs of fine flour and knead
it and bake some bread." 7 Then he ran to the
herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave
it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. 8 He
then brought some curds and milk and the calf
that had been prepared, and set these before
them. While they ate, he stood near them under a
tree. 9 "Where is your wife Sarah?" they asked
him. "There, in the tent," he said. 10 Then the
LORD said, "I will surely return to you about
this time next year, and Sarah your wife will
have a son." Â Â Â Â
20Sermon Text Genesis 181-15
Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the
tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah
were already old and well advanced in years, and
Sarah was past the age of childbearing. 12 So
Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I
am worn out and my master is old, will I now have
this pleasure? 13 Then the LORD said to Abraham,
"Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have
a child, now that I am old?' 14 Is anything too
hard for the LORD ? I will return to you at the
appointed time next year and Sarah will have a
son. 15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said,
"I did not laugh." But he said, "Yes, you did
laugh."
