3How does ICI waste management differ from
residential waste management in Guelph?
- Waste from ICI sources is collected
- and managed by waste and recyclables
- hauling companies through privately
- arranged contracts.
The City doesnt service these sectors, however
it does provide support and advice for those
wishing to start or improve their recycling and
waste reduction programs.
4History of Waste ICI Waste Management in Guelph
- 1987 City-wide blue box recycling
- 1995 Conversion to Wet-Dry
- front end bin for each stream
- 1998 Due to poor quality of sorting, Wet-Dry
- was found to be unsuitable for ICI
sectors. - Enhanced Recycling was introduced
and - included waste and recycling
streams only - the Wet stream was abandoned.
2003 Upgrades to the Guelph recycling plant
required further improvements in
the quality of sorting. The City informed the
waste hauling companies that front
end loads of recyclables would no longer be
accepted. As a result, waste
haulers worked with their customers to convert to
a cart-based recycling collection
program.

in Guelph are delivered to the Waste Resource
Innovation Centre for recycling some are
recycled elsewhere

7Recycling is the law!...for many business
The Ontario Environmental Protection Act
includes Regulations known as the 3Rs Regs
that govern recycling programs in these Sectors.
- Refer to Regulations 102/94 and 103/94 on the MOE
- website to find out if your building is required
to recycle. - Even if not, recycling is good for business and
good for - the environment.
8 Beyond Recycling
- Consider initiating a composting program for food
waste the City can offer advice to get you
started - Reduce waste at the source often savings
result when corporate purchasing policies focus
on maximizing recycled content and minimizing
packaging waste
- Get creative!
- Encourage, facilitate and reward re-use actions -
for example, offer a discount on coffee for those
who carry their own mug - Promote Waste Reduction Week and increase
awareness - Offer incentives for waste reduction ideas

- Use clear and consistent communication pieces
include pictures and keep it simple! - Set goals measure and celebrate results
- Work closely with your waste hauler to gather
feedback about your sorting success
