Title: Ryan
1Ryan
Ryan is a key stage 4 learner taking a Foundation
Diploma in manufacturing and product design. He
is practical, hands-on type of person with an
enquiring mind. Ryan is interested in machines
and technology and how things work. He is also
interested in food and enjoys watching celebrity
chefs on TV. The Diploma was therefore the
perfect choice for Ryan. It appealed to the
practical, analytical side of his nature, and he
would be able to see how practical,
problem-solving knowledge could be applied to the
production of food.

Work experience
Project
Ryan spent two weeks working in different
production areas of a large factory producing
sliced bread and other bakery products. He was
mainly involved in packaging and packing the
finished products and he was interested to see
what different machines were used for these
processes and how operatives were needed to work
with the machinery for certain processes. He
returned to the factory for two hours a week for
half a term to work on his project.
English GCSE Mathematics GCSE Science GCSE ICT
GCSE
Ryans project was based on one of his work
experience tasks which had been to take five tea
cakes at a time from a conveyor belt and insert
them into a plastic bag. He believed he could
design a simple apparatus which would simply and
speed up the task. He produced some outline
drawings using image-editing software and
discussed with the staff at the factory who
helped him analyse the practical merits of his
design, as well as the costs and the workflow
implications. Ryan presented his project as a
written report which incorporated his drawings
and his conclusions.
Progression route Ryan enjoys his Diploma, but
he is still undecided about his career direction.
He decides his next step should be to go to an FE
college to take a one-year GCSE course to
increase his grades in English, mathematics,
science, ICT. He will also study for a GCSE in
sociology because he will thinks he will enjoy
learning a completely new subject.
