Aims of the project
  • The main aim of the project was to link schools
    and local children to a new club environment, in
    a new sport with a particular emphasis on young
    people gaining one more hour of community sport
    in a club setting.
  • The project entailed both intra-school
    competition and inter school competition at the
    club.
  • Softball and Baseball is a minority sport that is
    currently not part of the National Competition
    Framework.

Meeting the Challenge
  • The PDM and National Development Manger for
    softball worked together to develop a plan around
    delivery and future development.
  • Six primary Schools were identified in the
    primary project and all 9 secondary schools were
    invited to be part of the secondary schools
    project.
  • The NGB provided a coach for the whole project.
  • All primary schools were offered 5 weeks
    curriculum coaching for two members of staff
    which included intra-school competition.
  • Each staff received a foundation certificate in
    baseball/softball as part of their own CPD.

Meeting the Challenge
  • During week 5, all schools had an intra-school
    competition to select two teams to represent the
    school.
  • In week 6, all schools attended an inter-school
    competition held on the club site involving 120
    children.
  • All children were invited to attend a half-term
    camp immediately following the competition which
    24 children attended.
  • Children were invited to join the club and play
    for one of the teams.

Impact
  • 300 young people from KS2 involved with the
    programme at coaching level. 100hours of coaching
    delivery in 5 weeks.
  • 300 young people involved in intra-school
    competition.
  • 120 young people involved in inter-school
    competition.
  • 24 progressed to the holiday camp.
  • 15 young people have joined the club and play
    baseball on a weekly basis.
  • 14 girls attended the first regional academy at
    the club.
  • 5 young people from the programme overall have
    been identified as gifted and talented and are
    now part of the GB national programme.
  • 3 represented Great Britain this summer.

Impact
  • All schools have received full equipment bags
    from the School Sport Partnership to continue
    delivery.
  • 20 teachers trained with a foundation
    certificate.
  • All schools have put baseball/softball into their
    curriculum maps.
  • One school has replaced cricket for baseball/
    softball.
  • Overall 600 young people introduced to a new and
    exciting sport.

Future
  • School Sport Coach to be employed to deliver
    softball across the Partnership.
  • Softball and baseball provided to both girls and
    boys at two different venues across Wokingham
    through Sport Unlimited.
  • Regional academy launched at the club for girls,
    team entering into National Junior Indoor and
    summer League.
  • Dates set for partnership primary and secondary
    competitions for 2008.
  • Leadership training to be provided at leadership
    academy to support competition.
  • Foundation certificate training offered to all
    Primary school teachers in the Partnership.
