1Safety in the Laboratory
2Wear Goggles, Gloves, and a Lab Apron
- Goggles should be worn anytime glassware and/or
chemicals are being used - Gloves and an apron should be worn if chemicals
are corrosive
3Never Work Alone in the Lab
- Work with your lab group to complete the lab
tasks. - Do not get distracted and leave equipment
unattended!
4Wear Proper Clothing for Lab Work
- Dangling jewelry, long hair and loose clothing
can get caught in moving parts and catch on fire. - Wear appropriate foot-wear (no open-toed shoes).
5Have an Organized Workspace
- Only the equipment and materials being used for
the lab should be in the lab space - Remove all book bags and other materials that can
clutter your area!
6Read the Entire Experiment Before Starting the
Lab!
- Memorize the safety precautions
- Only use the equipment that is needed to complete
the experiment
7Be Alert and Walk With Care in the Lab
- Pay attention to your area and what is going on
in it! - Avoid bumping into other students
- Stay at your lab station at all times!
8Know the Location of All Safety Equipment
- Fire extinguisher
- Fire blanket
- First aid kit
- Chemical shower and eye wash station
- Vent hood
9Report Any Lab Accidents to Me Immediately
- If you get a chemical in your eyes proceed to
the eye wash station notify your teacher - If you spill a chemical on your skin wash it
off with lukewarm water call your teacher
10Do Not Perform Unauthorized Experiments
- ..and only use equipment in the manner for which
it is intended
11When Using Chemicals
- take only what you need and do not put unused
chemicals back into the original container
(unless specified by me to do so) - always waft chemicals do not directly smell
the chemical in the test tube
12Use Caution When Working With Electrical Devices
- Do not use equipment with frayed or twisted cords
- Do not let cords dangle from work stations
- Unplug immediately when you are finished with an
electrical device
13Horseplay in the Lab Is Prohibited and DANGEROUS
- Always follow the lab procedures and make certain
your lab members are following procedures as well - An organized lab becomes your responsibility!
