• The Ottoman Empire began when Muslim Turks took
  over lands owned by the Christian Byzantine
  Empire.
• This took place in the mid-1200s.

• Asia, Africa, and Europe
• Specifically
• The Balkan Peninsula of Europe (Present day
  Greece and Turkey)
• Northern Africa (Parts of present day Egypt,
  Algeria, Tunisian, Libya, and Morocco)
• The Southwestern part of Asia (Present day
  Jordan, Syria, Arabia, and Turkey)

How did the Ottoman Empire impact TRADE?

• Trade spread as the Ottomans spread their empire.
• Goods from the east and the west were shipped
  throughout the empire.
• As trade grew, so did the wealth of the empire!

How did the Ottoman Empire impact RELIGION?

• It led to the spread of the Muslim religion.
• Almost all of the lands once owned by the Ottoman
  Empire are dominated by the Muslim religion.

Constantinople Istanbul

• The Muslim warriors took over the Byzantine
  Constantinople, and named it Istanbul.
• Istanbul became the capital of the Muslim Ottoman
  Empire.

• Ruled by Sultans (similar to Caliphs).
• Suleyman was the most successful sultan.
• He spread the empire while trading
• He spread the Muslim religion

How did WWI impact the Ottoman Empire?

• The Ottomans joined Germany in WWI
• When Germany lost the war, so did the Ottoman
  Empire.
• The end of WWI meant the end of the Ottoman
  Empire.
• It was divided by the allied powers that won WWI
  (Great Britain, France, etc.)

• It no longer exists!
• The lands once owned by the Ottoman Empire are
  often war-torn due to their division after WWI.
