2SOURCE OF ALL ENERGY ON EARTH
Energy received from the sun in 1 day gt 100 times
the energy consumed by all countries in a year
SUN
EARTH
3POTENTIAL LAND USE
Seeds 10 tons/ha Oil
2.5 tons/ha Cake 7.5
tons/ha Price of seeds gt Rs 5000/ton
4PRODUCTION COST OF OIL
5MARKET COST OF OIL
6 SUSTAINABLE ORGANIC FERTILISER
- How much is available?
- 4 kg Pongamia seeds
- ? 1 kg oil 3 kg cake
Cake is a fertilizer
- Advantages
- Can be produced in
- the farm
- Pest repellents
- Market cost Rs 5/kg
How much to apply Paddy 300
kg/ha Banana 2 kg/pl. Areca
2 kg/pl.
7DEGREE OF PROCESSING
8VILLAGE LEVEL CONVERSION
Job Opportunities
- Decorticating
- Oil milling
- Filtering
- Use of oil
- Sale of oil
- Sale of cake
- Pulverizing
- Use and sale of powdered biomass
9INDUSTRIAL CONVERSION - I
Opportunities
- Bio diesel (Transesterification)
- Bio gasoline (Catalytic pyrolysis)
- Bio ethanol from
- -Carbohydrates
- -Cellulose
- Bio plastics (from oil cake)
- Bio gas feed pellets (do)
10INDUSTRIAL CONVERSION - II
Opportunities
11BIODIESEL IS AS GOOD AS PETRO DIESEL
12MARKET POTENTIAL
Present consumption of petroleum 150 mn t Import
component 120 mn t (30 bn USD) Projected
consumption, 2030 300 mn t (90 for
transportation) Energy need in India, 2030
400,000 MW Can we substitute 20 of transport
requirement 5 of power?
13A QUICK STRATEGY
Start growing seasonals like castor along the
borders and as an inter-crop for immediate
generation and use of oil Promote 20
substitution with filtered oil
14KARNATAKA
TOTAL GEOGRAPHICAL AREA 19.4 Mn ha FOREST
AREA 3.8 Mn
ha NON-ARABLE LAND 7.9
Mn ha EVERY 10 USE FOR OIL SEEDS WILL GIVE 20
Mn T OF OIL PER YEAR
15STRATEGY-1 (FOR AGRICULTURAL LAND)
_at_ 1000 Pongamia trees per hectare 10 of land
utilized
Yield 1000 kg Pongamia seeds
250 kg of oil and 750 kg of cake, equal to 325 kg
urea
CURRENT FERTILIZER INPUT 76.2 kg/ha HENCE
POTENTIAL TO DOUBLE AGRI OUTPUT
16STRATEGY-2 (FOR WASTELANDS)
Yield 10 tons/ha
2.5 tons/ha of oil and 7.5 tons of cake
intercropped with castor
INCOME 50,000 INR/ha
17STRATEGY-3 (FOR MARGINAL LAND)
Pongamia will provide bio-fertilizer for
jatropha, mahua, castor and other oil seed
bearing plants
18POTENTIAL DISTRICTS
- Kolar - Honge, Castor
- Tumkur - Honge, Jatropha, Castor
- Chitradurga - Honge, Castor
- Uttara Kannada - Jatropha, Hippe
- Bidar - Neem, Castor
- Bijapur - Neem, Castor
- Bangalore (R ) - Honge, Castor, Hippe
19BUSINESS STRATEGY / MODELS
- DEVELOP PLANTATIONS
- DEVELOP PROCUREMENT SYSTEMS (SUBSIDIARY
OCCUPATION TO COMPLEMENT OTHER AGRI OPERATIONS) - IDEALLY, DEVELOP ONE INTEGRATED PROJECT
EACH OF THE ABOVE MODELS (SERVE AS REPLICABLE
MODELS)
20- Rashtrapati Bhavan conducted a national seminar
at Hyderabad in June 06. - The recommendations were
- 60 Mn T of bio diesel p.a. by 2030
- Coordinated plan for 6 Mn T by 2010
- R D for productivity improvement
- Increase area under bio diesel crops to achieve
30 Mn T by 2020 60 Mn T by 2030 - Bio diesel corporation at centre bio diesel
boards at State level
21ADVANTAGE CASTOR
- Castor is a relatively high value crop
- Castor can be grown through out the year
- Can be used as an intercrop
- Castor is a dry land crop but yields are as large
as 700 to 1000 kg /crop - Castor has been well researched in India
22ADVANTAGE CASTOR
- 100 day varieties are already being grown in
Gujarat, Rajasthan and AP - The seeds are non perishable
- If grown continuously gluts are avoided
- Farming techniques are well established
- Farmers are familiar with the crop
23LAND AND WATER FOR BIOFUELS CAN LEAD TO ALL
ROUND DEVELOPMENT AND A CLEANER ENVIRONMENT
