MILE Program Overview
  • Currently a network of 5 music teachers and 5
    classroom teachers who collaboratively design and
    implement integrated music curricula
  • Grades 1-3

    not MENC)

  • 05-06 (this school year) was the Pilot Year
  • Prospective teachers (YOU!) can join the 2nd MILE
    Cohort, and begin participating in 06-07

    Study with a national network of schools

  • Establish music as a core academic subject
    (music for musics sake) AND a springboard to
    other academic subjects
  • Form collaborative partnerships with classroom
    teachers, administrators, and artists
  • Design and implement engaging, integrated music
    curricula that support student achievement and
    learning in all academic areas
  • Document student learning to provide evidence of
    learning across academic subject areas
  • Maintain the Instrumental Music Program, Grades

MILE Curriculum
  • Comprehensive--Students do all that a musician
    would do listen, create, perform, question,
    reflect, and assess musical works, including
    their own
  • Authentic Music lessons that integrate learning
    strategies and concepts of other academic areas
    whenever and wherever appropriate
  • Shared curriculum ideas, individualized by music
    specialist and classroom teacher at each school
