Metadata 101
  • What Is Metadata?
  • Metadata is a component of data which describes
the data. It is structured data about data."
    Metadata describes the content, quality,
condition, and other characteristics of data.
Metadata describes the who, what, when, where,
why, and how about a data set. Without proper
documentation a data set is incomplete.

Role of Metadata Standards (cont.)
  • Standards provide a common set of terms. With
standards, there is no confusion about what is
being communicated by a particular term. From one
metadata record to the next, the terminology is
    the same.
  • Standards allow for quick location of a certain
    element.
  • Enable metadata creator and and end user to
make sense of information. Help finding a
specific piece of information in a metadata
    record

5
Role of Metadata Standards (cont)
  • Standards enable automated searches
  • When standards are used, computers can be
programmed to search and find useful data sets.
  • Standards are used in libraries, private
industries, government, etc., to describe data

Metadata Standards in Federal Government
  • Metadata Standards are federally mandated. Under
Executive Order No. 12906, all federal agencies
and organizations receiving federal funds must
document their geospatial data using the Federal
    Geographic Data Committee's Content Standard
(FGDC) for Digital Geospatial Metadata and must
publish that metadata through the clearinghouse
    system.
