  • E-book Selection Thinking Today win win
  • User Preference Trends
  • Access Integration models support for
  • E-resource/E-book Life Cycle management
  • Authentication/Authorization trends
  • Standards Open/ XML /OAI/OKI/SOAP
  • Fee/ License models site licenses

4
Current Library Selection Thinking
  • Currently 400 e-texts in our E-resources db
  • More coming ( 14,000 coming months)
  • University Press, Proceedings Gov Docs, Society
Standards, Reference Books, Literature on Line
    (LION)
  • Critical collections of books?
  • Leverage the power of
  • Speed/efficiency of access,
  • Convenience (middle of night) and
  • Keyword search (analysis).

5
Recent Usage Data on E-Journal replacing Print gt
E-books?
  • UCs Collection Management Initiative - Gary
    Lawrence Conclusions
  • Bottom Line E-journals are very popular
  • Faculty only screamed a very little
  • Campuses which removed print had higher use of
e-journals by 60. Only a very few print
    requests at these campuses.
  • Digital use is higher than for the same print
  • 10x on average
  • 33x for Sciences

6
Recent Usage Data on E-Journal replacing Print gt
E-books?
  • Sample of users heavy on grads and faculty.
  • E-j is more widely used than print
  • Acceptance is high (faculty slightly
    conservative)
  • E-j is favored for research
  • Convenience is biggest factor
  • Major barrier is screen reading and paging
  • Office and home is major use point (1/2 have high
    speed). Proxy/authentication is an issue
  • One faculty diffacknowledge deficiency in skills
  • Note UC will keep one (1) shared print cc for
    all campuses

7
Metadata Oh Yea, but How much?
  • Discovery None to More shifting thinking -
    pro and con
  • If Little use keyword
  • If Lots (DC, MARC) for subject browsing. But
remember We do not know what terms to browse in
the future but we can keyword anything.
  • Metadata cost money - so at least keyword
  • Identifiers for matching and de-dubing OCLA,
    ISSN, DOI??

8
Access Integration and Life Cycles E-book support
  • Have learned that the data model for supporting
e-resources is fundamentally different than print
  • E.g Packages, coverage, dynamic nature of links
  • Therefore Think both Catalog and specialty
databases for electronic resources accessed via
Portal for integration and de- dubing
  • E.g. Tim Jewels work at UW (with UCLA and other
large academics) new standards for metadata
  • Consider sending XML data which constantly
    updates
  • Titles available in package
  • Key metadata and
  • Access restrictions and privacy statements

9
Developing Web System Environment
  • XML
  • OAI Open Archive Initiative (XML)
  • OKI and IMS/CMS
  • SOAP
  • Web Services

10
What Fee Structure ?
  • Big Disincentive Current -number of
    simultaneous user limits
  • Go for Site License based on size of campus
    community/ class

11
Sifting Access Control Models
  • Currently use in IP ranges
  • Building Campus Authentication and Authorization
    systems
  • in test as simple Web Service
  • Future - Shibboleth (Liberty Alliance) standards
federated authentication singe sign on to
    validate a class participant

12
Library E-book Conclusions/ Predictions
  • Prediction E-books will follow on success of
    E-journals
  • Recommendation more open fee structure
  • Recommendation access controls are coming
meanwhile error on the side of Fair Use and build
    market/mind share
  • Prediction Keep them E-books coming we will
    buy them someday !
