Mission Statement
  • Believing in the spirit of collaboration and that
    some of the best resources are found in our
    fellow librarians, the mission of the Southeast
    Kansas Academic Librarians Council is to promote
    and facilitate the sharing of educational
    resources and improve library services through
    the exchange of ideas, best practices
  • and policies.

  • Originally was part of the Southeast Kansas
    Community and Junior College Consortium January
    5, 1971
  • First named Southeast Kansas Community College
    Library Directors Council
  • Six original members were
  • Allen County Community College
  • Coffeyville Community College
  • Fort Scott Community College
  • Independence Community College
  • Labette Community College
  • Neosho County Community College

History of SEKALC 1970s
  • November 1975
  • Began to interlibrary loan audiovisual materials
    among themselves
  • 1977
  • Voted to assess each member institution 200 to
    start building a borrowing collection of films
  • Assessment was raised to 450 in 1986 where it
    remains today
  • Allen County houses the collection of
    audio-visual materials

  • 1978
  • Cowley County began to attend meeting
    unofficially
  • 1979
  • Group divided up magazines and journals out of
    various indexes for purchase
  • Sought grant to purchase microfilm copies of
    these journals. Group interlibrary loaned copies
    of microfilmed articles through the 90s.

  • 1983
  • First attempt to purchase an automated library
    system collectively - not successful
  • 1985
  • PSU started regularly attending meetings
  • Smiley Affair
  • 1988
  • Cowley County became official member
  • 1989
  • Attempted to buy fax machines from grant funding

  • History is sketchy through this decade.
  • Continued to discuss
  • New technologies

  • Many current members joined during the 1990s

  • 2000
  • Name changed to Southeast Kansas Academic
    Librarians Council
  • 2001
  • Attempted another shot at combined automation.
    Group decided to shelve the project and let each
    institution pursue their own automation

  • First group presentation with Dodge City
    Community College
  • Butler Community College joined the group
  • 2003
  • Bylaws and mission statement were updated
  • Historian position was developed and resides at
    Labette Community College
