What is a smartdevice?

• Smart devices are PCs, laptops, workstations,
  phones, handheld computers, Tablet PCs, and
  machines we are only beginning to imagine. What
  makes these devices "smart" is their ability to
  access Web services, enabling you to interact
  with your data regardless of the location, type,
  and number of devices you use.

PDA (Personal Digital Assistant)

• A handheld device that combines computing,
  telephone/fax, Internet and networking features.
• PDAs are also called palmtops, handheld
  computers, and pocket computers.

Smartphones

• A smartphone is a fully functional mobile phone
  with personal computer functionality.
• Most smartphones are camera phones that support
  full featured email capabilities with the
  functionality of a complete personal organizer.
• An important feature of most smartphones is that
  applications for enhanced data processing and
  connectivity can be installed on the device.

What do smartdevices have to do with our class?

• We can write simple VB applications for
  smartdevices.
• We can test to see if they work through the use
  of built-in emulators in Visual Studio.
• We can write applications in different
  smartdevice Operating Systems.

What is an emulator?

• the ability of a program or device to imitate
  another program or device
• Visual Studio will imitate the PocketPC 2003
  operating system in one of my examples.
