  • METHODS
  • How Data Was Collected
  • Instrument Design Enable provided two versions
of surveys that had been used in previous years.
These surveys were combined for this study.
  • Target Population and Sample The target
population consists of all 203 participants in
    Enables Self-Directed Personal Services Program.
Every third person was selected from a list of
participants first names and phone numbers until
170 individuals (sampling frame) was chosen. A
total of 100 responses (sample) were collected
    from the 170 telephone calls.
  • Method of Contact The respondents were called
Monday through Friday between the hours of
    1000am to 1200pm, 100pm to 500pm, and 700pm
to 800pm. Those who could be reached and who
agreed to participate were administered the
survey. The respondents responses were each
recorded on a paper copy of the survey. From the
sampling frame of 170 individuals, a response
rate of 59 (100 respondents) was collected.

Statistics Paper
  • This paper is designed to develop and test your
analytical skills for dealing with simple
    quantitative data.
  • You will be relating certain chapters in the
Maxwell Manual to the entire How to Lie with
Statistics book and a NYTimes Article. The
questions, article, and template are on the 315
    website.
  • Due next class (9/30)

9
Statistics Paper Template
  • Found on the 315 website under Grade Sheets and
    Templates
  • How to use the template
  • Insert your double-spaced answers below each of
    the corresponding questions
  • Remember to put your name on the grade sheet
  • (Just like a 101 module)

10
Statistics PaperPart A
  • A. OBTAINING A SAMPLE (1-2 pages, double spaced)
  • Using Chapter 4 of The Maxwell Manual, describe
whether or not you anticipate getting a
representative sample of data for your project,
whether a survey or records, and explain what it
    is
  • Cite one example of general poor survey and
polling techniques from the NY Times article
Precisely False vs. Approximately Right A
Readers Guide to Polls that may pose a problem
for the survey you just proposed.

11
Statistics PaperPart B
  • B. CONTROL GROUPS (1 page, double spaced)
  • Give the toothpaste example from How to Lie with
Statistics that shows a problem in drawing a
conclusion through the use of a control group and
    explain what the problem is
  • Discuss how you could correct the problem

12
Statistics PaperPart C
  • C. SCALING NUMBERS (1-2 pages, double spaced)
  • Give one example of a misleading use of
statistics from How to Lie with Statistics that
could have been corrected by scaling numbers.
  • Show how scaling numbers would have corrected the
problem by actually describing the scale you
would suggest using (dont use percents to
    scale).
  • Ex Traffic Death Rate per 100 Million Miles
    Drive
  • Explain what was misleading about the original
figure and then write an interpretation using the
    scaled number.

13
Statistics PaperPart D
  • D. GRAPHING (1-2 pages, double spaced)
  • Give one example from How to Lie with Statistics
that shows an inappropriate use of either a bar
graph or trend line and briefly explain.
  • Present a hypothetical bar graph or trend line
for your project and explain how using one of the
tricks discussed in the book will give a
    misleading finding.
  • Explain what you could do to correct the
misleading bar graph/trend line by showing a
revised hypothetical bar graph or figure.

14
Statistics PaperPart E
  • E. PERCENT CHANGE (1-2 pages, double spaced)
  • From How to Lie with Statistics, give an example
of a misleading numerical figure that could have
been corrected by using the percent change
calculation either to show a difference between
two time periods or between two cases (city or
    organization).
  • Correct this figure using the percent change
    calculation (show calculation below).
  • Write a sentence that uses the percent change
    calculation that interprets the difference
    correctly.
