Title: MTP Water Products Area Update
1MTP Water Products AreaUpdate
2Overall Aim
- MTP aims to reduce the environmental impact of
products.
No intervention
- For the water products area this means
2005
Supporting Policy implementation to combat the
effects of key drivers causing strain on water
resourcesand ensure minimum waste of water
through the use of water efficient products
3Key components
Influencing factors
Product Information
Action Plans
Voluntary measures (e.g. retailer agreements)
Population/ housing growth
Current product performance
Product innovation
Lifestyle/ Amenity
Raising awareness
Test methods
Commercial
Government Policy
Best Practice
Modelling impact of policies on water usage
4Policies impacting on water efficiency
- Government Sustainable procurement (Defra EBC)
- Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations (Defra
WSR) - Building Regulations (CLG)
- Code for Sustainable Homes (CLG)
- Mandating Water Efficiency in New Homes (CLG)
- Metering in water scarce areas (Defra WSR)
- Identifying area of water stress (EA)
- Water Product Information Scheme (Defra WSR)
- Regional Spatial Strategies (RPB)
5Progress in 2006/7
- Focussed on WCs, showers, baths
- For each product type
- 2 briefing notes (updated rewritten)
- Actions to improve design and efficiency
- Water efficiency performance tests
- Policy Brief (updated rewritten)
- Impact of policies modelled and possible water
savings highlighted - Performance levels required to achieve desired
impact have been defined (PSIB)
6Supporting work items in 2006/07
- To supplement technical data in briefing notes
and progress action plans, including - Stakeholder engagement NWCG, policy leaders,
suppliers, manufacturers, water companies . - Quick Wins Potential savings by change to Govt.
purchasing specification for WCs - Test Standards Reports on current standards,
developments, gaps and proposals - Product performance and reliable information.
- Innovation Water savings from very low use WCs.
- Innovation Water savings from cascading water
use in industrial premises - 23 Product stock models, to cover showers, baths
and WCs. Including policy analysis to produce
Reference, Policy and Earliest Best
Practice scenario projections forward to 2020.
7Current outputs
- BN DW Shower
- BN DW Bath Assumptions underlying stock
modelling for - BN DW WC baths, showers WCs
- BN WAT 05
- BN WAT 06 Water efficiency performance tests for
baths, - BN WAT 07 showers WCs
- BN WAT 18 Innovation BN on trade off between
energy water - BN WAT 19 Innovation BN on alternative sources of
water - BN WAT 20 Innovation BN on very low water use WCs
- BN WAT 21 Performance standards for water using
products an overview - BN WAT 22 Domestic water consumption in domestic
and non-domestic properties - BN WAT 23 Reliability of information on water
consumption of appliances - BNWATSHO1 Consumer views about showers summary
report.
8Current projections - WCs
9Current projections - baths
10Current projections - showers
11Potential barriers to achieving projections
- Limited evidence of water consumption product
performance in new properties - New product installations
- Retrofit products
- Lack of common test methodologies
- Lack of agreement on future minimum standards for
products - Lack of supply chain initiatives
- No consolidated evidence of consumer attitudes to
water using products
1207/08 Programme
13Objectives
- To provide the underpinning knowledge base for
performance standards, to the support the WPIS
and other policies. - To maintain an evidence base that covers products
responsible for over 80 of domestic water
consumption in homes. - To consider the life cycle assessment of water
efficient products, including their impact on
carbon and waste streams. - To continue to engage and consult with
stakeholders from the wider water industry.
14Current projects
- Maintenance of existing evidence base
- Maintain models, BNs, PBs and performance
standards - WCs, baths showers
- Collate evidence model water use for tapware
- Updated evidence base including all product types
currently available - New Policy Brief for tapware
- Overview of test methodologies for tapware
- Modelling work for tapware including Policy and
EBP lines - PSIB for tapware
- Product area stakeholder workshops
- International experience of product labelling
- Scoping studies for next batch of products
15Planned projects
- Shower performance criteria and definition
- WPIS Database Phase 2
- Agreeing and adopting test methodologies
- Quantify scope for better ergonomic labels,
including potential impact - Energy consumption of rainwater harvesting
systems - Impact on carbon of different water
efficiency/conservation strategies
