Title: Boldness

1
  • Boldness Clarity How We Should do Evangelism
A Study from Jesus, Paul, Mark, Ephesians,
    Colossians

2
Principle 1
  • Telling others the Gospel is
  • a Necessity, not an Option.
  • Even from the very first day.
  • 2 Corinthians 517-20
  • Lacking the gift does not give an excuse.
  • Philippians 15 participation from the very
    first day
  • How do you avoid legalism?

3
Jesus Teaching on Evangelism
  • Mark 4 Parable of the Sower
  • Lets focus not on the soils but on the sower

4
  • Mark 43-9 v.3 "Listen to this! Behold, the
    sower went out to sow
  • 4 as he was sowing, some seed fell beside the
road, and the birds came and ate it up.
  • 5 "Other seed fell on the rocky
ground where it did not have much
    soil
  • and immediately it sprang
up because it had no depth of
    soil.
  • 6 "And after the sun had risen,
  • it was scorched and because it
had no root, it withered away.
  • 7 "Other seed fell among the
thorns, and the thorns came up and choked
    it, it yielded no crop.
  • 8 "Other seeds fell into the good soil, and as
they grew up and increased, they yielded a crop
and produced thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold."
  • 9 And He was saying, "He who has ears to hear,
    let him hear."

5
Principle 2
  • Telling others the Gospel must be something
    purposefully done.
  • The Sower went out to sow... v. 3
  • The very first verb Jesus uses in this parable is
    that the sower WENT OUT.

6
Principle 3
  • Telling others the Gospel must be Pervasive
    Everywhere.
  • . . . the road . . . the rocky soil . . . the
    soil with thorns . . . v. 4-7
  • What seems stupid in a human sense becomes a
    necessity in a spiritual sense.

7
Principle 4
  • Telling others the Gospel can be Discouraging,
    Not Always Joyous
  • After the emotion of fear, comes the emotion of
    frustration.
  • Psalm 1265 those who sow with tears . . .

8
Principle 5
  • Telling others the Gospel IS Fruitful, it is Not
    a Waste
  • Verse 8 other seed fell in good soil and
    yielded a crop 30, 60, 100 times
  • Therefore the final emotion of evangelism is joy.
  • Psalm 1265 . . . will reap with great joy.

9
Principle 6
  • Telling others the Gospel must contain all of the
Gospel BECAUSE the Gospel is not puny but
    POWERFUL
  • v. 32 The Parable of the Mustard Seed

10
Principle 7
  • Telling others the Gospel must contain all of the
    Gospel . . .
  • BECAUSE it is the only thing that will have an
eternal impact in the heart of the non-believer.

11
  • The Seed is Made for the Soil.
  • The Soil is Made for the Seed.
  • Just as surely as . . .
  • The Gospel is Made for the Human Heart.
  • The Human Heart is Made for the Gospel.
  • Next, we will check out what Paul says.

12
  • Lets look at what Paul has to say about sharing
    our faith.

13
Ephesians 618-20
  • 19 and pray on my behalf,
  • that utterance may be given to me in the
  • opening of my mouth,
  • to make known
  • . . . with BOLDNESS
  • the mystery of the gospel,
  • for which I am an ambassador in chains that in
    proclaiming it, I may speak
  • BOLDLY,
  • . . . AS I SHOULD SPEAK.

14
Principle 8
  • Telling others the Gospel must be done BOLDLY
    because
  • we are told by the Bible that this is how it
    should be done.

15
Colossians 43-4
  • praying at the same time for us as well, that God
will open up to us a door for the word, so that
    we may
  • speak forth
  • the mystery of Christ, for which I have also
    been imprisoned
  • that I may make it
  • CLEAR
  • in the way I SHOULD SPEAK.

16
Principle 9
  • Telling others the Gospel must be done CLEARLY
    because . . .
  • we are told by the Bible that this is how it
    should be done.

17
  • Paul is basically saying here
  • IAN APOSTLE NEED PRAYER
  • Relating to evangelism
  • And the thing I need to concern myself with. The
    thing for which I need prayer. Is . . . That I
    would be
  • BOLD and CLEAR
  • Because that is how it should be done.

18
Boldness and Clarity
  • There is no other place in scripture where these
    three things come together
  • 1. The need for prayer at the highest level
  • 2. In regards to evangelism sharing the Gospel
  • 3. Where we are told how it should be done.

19
  • What Boldness is Not
  • Brashness
  • Blasting people
  • Belligerence (arguing)
  • Brain-washing

20
  • What Boldness IS
  • Speaking and getting to the point ASAP.
  • Not allowing fear to prevent us from seeking to
push forward. (example of New Testament
    believers)
  • Making friendships on the basis of
  • who you are in Christ
  • the message you carry.

21
Differences between Boldness Clarity
  • Boldness is a choice.
  • Clarity is a process.
  • Boldness has to do with that germinating Gospel
    content.
  • Clarity making sure the content is understood. It
    is the Gospel packaging.

22
Principle 10
  • There are two parts to the Gospel
  • The Contents of the Gospel
  • The Packaging of the Gospel
  • Which can change?
  • Which cannot change?

23
Principle 11
  • Sharing our faith is most effective when we make
sure we share ALL of the Gospel . . .
  • Acts 520 Go your way, stand and speak to the
people . . . the whole message of this Life.
  • along with a challenge or invitation for the
    person to make choice.
  • Acts 237-38 Peters sermon and the peoples
    response at the end.

24
Principle 12
  • Telling others the Gospel is most effective when
we go to find Jesus sheep.
  • John 1027 Jesus says - My sheep hear my
voice, and I know then, and they follow me . . .
  • To find sheep, we must find hearers. Thus, we
stick with people who are hearers.
  • We try not to shed hearers.

APPLICATION How to Make This Real
  • What we have us consider adopting as an
    evangelism mentality
  • A 100 TRY ATTITUDE - We want to TRY to
get to the whole Gospel even on the first meeting
    with an individual.
  • TRYING is not always ACHIEVING. We can
control TRYING. We cant control ACHIEVING.
This follows the instructions that Peter gives us
    in 1 Peter 315.
  • A 100 NO SHED ATTITUDE We are not willing
to leave a relationship with one who is a
    hearer. They initiate leaving.
  • This is the TIME RELATIONSHIP aspect that
allows us to move to CLARITY. It turns the
corner in our Model to make sure the
    non-believer hears and understands.
  • John 1027

27
APPLICATION
  • Decide to avoid the NEEDLESS DICHOTOMY
  • that has plagued believers in recent years.
  • It is NOT either / or
  • relational evangelism or boldness evangelism
  • Rather it is BOTH / AND at the same time!

28
  • We chose to live out
  • 1 Peter 315
  • but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts,
  • always being ready
  • to make a defense
  • to everyone
  • who asks you
  • (or even those who dont ask!)
  • to give an account
  • for the hope that is in you,
  • yet with gentleness and reverence

29
APPLICATION
  • We Refuse to Live with a
  • Multiple-Personality Disorder
  • We act the same way with non-believers as we do
    with believers.

30
APPLICATION
  • Study the Gospel know the stuff
  • Make sure your testimony has the stuff
  • Learn / memorize something like the 4SL
  • It is a simple outline of John 316
  • It is what it takes to communicate the stuff.
  • It is very raw. But with some . . . Thats all
    it takes!
  • Use it as a skeletal outline to move towards
    clarity.
  • Become ready to move beyond the 4SL with a
    person.
  • Learn many ways to share the Gospel
  • Believe in divine appointments
  • for our life is NOT BY CHANCE! Ephesians
    210
