• Worst health crisis in 700 years
• United Nations in 2001 called AIDS pandemic a
  global emergency
• 46 million persons infected
• Over 20 million have died
• Daily death toll equals 40 jumbo jets crashing
  every day!

Africa Genocide Of Indifference

• Women, young adults, children most hurt in
  developing countries
• HIV/AIDS threatens development, social cohesion,
  food security, life expectancy imposes a
  devastating economic burden
• 6. About 50 women globally 58 sub-Saharan
  Africa infected

• Up to 46 million people estimated to be living
  with HIV/AIDS at end of 2004
• 90 in developing countries 75 in sub-Saharan
  Africa (29.4 million)
• 3. 21.8 million have died ¾ in Africa

• Since the days of John Wesley, United Methodists
  have cared for both the bodies and souls of all
  people
• Wesley himself ran a clinic on Fridays in London
  and wrote health pamphlets
• United Methodists have established hospitals
  schools to educate medical personnel around the
  world

UNITED METHODIST GLOBAL AIDS FUND INITIATED

• 2004 General Conference voted to raise 8 million
  over 4 years
• Amounts to 25 cents a member each year
• Can our church give an amount at least equal to
  1 per member over 4 years? Or more?
• Question will we?

• Every UM church in Rocky Mountain Conference
  urged to have a special Sunday raise money
• ¾ of funds used globally ¼ in the Rocky Mountain
  region

• New needs keep emerging, but here are some ways
  UM money has already helped people
• KenyaHelped persons living with HIV to purchase
  health kits to help others in need

• 2. Medicine bought to stop transmission of virus
  in India from mother-to-child during delivery
• 3. In Sierra Leone money sent to care for women
  raped during civil war 50 now HIV positive

Healing Health

• Sponsored health clinics in Denver African
  American churches/communities raising awareness,
  testing, teaching prevention
• Helped Russia UM Church work in prison to care
  for infected persons urge prevention
• Supported women caregivers working in India with
  orphans and others needing assistance
