What is Avian Flu

• Contagious respiratory infection in birds
  (domestic and wild) H5N1
• Confirmed animal to animal transmission, and
  animal to human
• No human to human transmission at this time
• Spread by
• Contact with carcass or bird feces
• Handling diseased birds

Why Worry about Avian Flu ?

• H5N1 Bird influenza has similarities to
  the 1918 Pandemic Influenza virus that killed
  20-40 million people worldwide
• Capable of mutating and mixing with the human
  influenza virus

How is Influenza Spread?

• Spread through droplet contact
• Direct person-to-person contact
• (1 metre/3 feet)
• Indirect contact with articles contaminated with
  droplets
• Virus can persist for hours

Pandemic Features

• 1-6 months warning from first global alert to
  local outbreaks - Less due to widespread
  air travel
• 1st wave often out-of-season, lasts 6-8 weeks
  (peak at 3-4 weeks)
• 2nd wave 3-9 months later may be more severe
• 3rd wave may also occur
