3Leave it as it is, nature has been at work on it
for eons, and man can only mar it. -
Theodore Roosevelt
4In 2001 global travel and tourism generated 4.5
trillion and is expected to increase 4 per year
to 9.3trillion in 2011.
5Sustainability is defined as development or
progress that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of the future to
meet its own needs. - World Tourism
Organization
6Expansion merely refers to growing larger
whereas development is the process of
improvement. Do we really want MORE?
7A sustainable tourism program should ensure
efficient use of environmental elements related
to the tourism industry, with the least possible
impact on ecological processes, natural heritage,
wildlife and biodiversity.
8Secondly, it must be respectful of the
socioeconomic elements of the host community,
working to maintain cultural rituals, mutual
understanding, tolerance, and heritage.
9Stakeholder synergy and tension
No sustainable initiative can be achieved by
uni-dimensional decision making. The challenge
of balancing the interests of business,
residents, government and visitors.
10Sustainable initiatives require considerable
planning, community cooperation, management and
effective marketing.
11 77 of arrivals to Northern Arizona come by
