Title: Classroom Walkthrough 2.0 CWT for Teachers

1
Classroom Walkthrough 2.0 (CWT)for Teachers
  • The Department of Professional Development

2
Classroom Walkthroughs are
  • CWTs are
  • A quick research-based way to see at-a-glance
what is happening in the school
  • A way for administrators and teachers to engage
    in reflective practice
  • A way to focus professional development on the
curricular and instructional needs of the school
  • CWTs are not
  • For teacher appraisal purposes
  • About individual teachers
  • Formal observations

3
CWT A 7-Step Process
  • Classroom Walkthrough is a 7-step process that is
    cyclical in nature
  • Planning walks with a focus
  • Collecting walkthrough data
  • Analyzing walkthrough data
  • Reflecting on walkthrough data
  • Identifying an action plan based on the data
  • Acting on the plan
  • Evaluating the plan

4
What type of data is collected during CWTs?
  • These categories are referred to as look-fors
  • Data is collected that reflects five categories
  • Curriculum
  • Instruction
  • Learner
  • Environment
  • Needs of the learner

5
Look-For Curriculum
  • What is the learning objective of the lesson?
  • Is the learning objective evident to the
    students?
  • Is the learning objective on target for
    grade-level standards?
  • Can Sunshine State Standard(s) be identified?

6
Look-For Instruction
  • Identify instructional practices such as
  • Modeling, coaching, discussion, hands-on
    experiences
  • Identify grouping format
  • Whole group, small group, paired, individual
  • Identify research-based instructional strategies
    such as
  • Identifying similarities and differences,
    summarizing/notetaking, recognizing
    effort/recognition, homework/practice

7
Look-For Learner
  • Identify student actions
  • Listening, reading, speaking, working with
    hands-on materials, writing
  • Identify instructional materials such as
  • Computer software, content-specific
    manipulatives, hand-held technology, lab/activity
    sheet, overhead/board/flip chart, websites
  • Determine level of student work
  • Recalling information, understanding information,
using information in a new way, breaking down
    information into parts, putting information
together in new ways, making judgments and
    justifying positions
  • Determine level of class engagement
  • Highly engaged, well managed, dysfunctional

8
Look-For Environment
  • Focus on the classroom environment
  • Materials are available in the classroom,
models/exemplars of quality student work are
posted, routines and procedures are evident,
    scoring rubrics are displayed/provided, students
interact with the classroom environment, student
    work displayed

9
Look-For Needs of the Learner
  • Is there evidence that the teacher is responding
to the different learning needs in the classroom?

10
How does my principal collect CWT Data?
  • There are two ways your principal can collect CWT
    data
  • Standard paper CWT Tool
  • PDA such as a Blackberry or Palm Pilot

11
How often are CWTs conducted?
  • CWTs can be conducted by your principal at any
    time to include
  • Fridays
  • PDD
  • Holidays
  • Test Days
  • Morning and Afternoon

12
Should I acknowledge my principal when they are
conducting a CWT in my classroom?
  • No. You should continue with your lesson and
    activities as usual.

13
Can my students acknowledge the principal when
they are conducting a CWT in my classroom?
  • Yes. Your principal may be unclear of the
learning objective or may want to determine if
the learning objective is evident to the
students. If this is the case, they will quietly
ask 2-3 students if they know what the learning
objective is and can state it in their own words.

14
How long will my principal be in the classroom?
  • A CWT should last no less and no longer than 4-7
    minutes.

15
Can I ask my principal for feedback about the CWT?
  • No. Feedback regarding the data collected during
CWTs is only shared during reflective meetings
with groups of two teachers or more.

16
What type of feedback will I receive during the
reflective meetings?
  • Trends, patterns, and correlations
  • No teacher identifying information will be shared

17
What happens after feedback is received?
  • Once your principal shares the CWT data during
the reflective meeting, the next step is to
    create an action plan.
  • At least 3 action items are established with a
clear timeline of completion and a contact
    person(s).
  • The action plan is then put into effect and
evaluated at a later pre-established date for
    success.
